I hadn't been feeling 100% for the last day or two. I was having a couple of "flare-ups" with the Rheumatoid Arthritis mainly in my wrists and elbows but it making me feel a bit tired. Fortunately this coincided with the first two days of the Bank Holiday weekend when it would have been doubtful if we would have gone walking anyway, but by the Monday I fancied something easy and not too far away so our old favourites the Kendal Scars was given the thumbs up. Not the brightest of days weather-wise, but we did see the odd patch of sunlight but mainly it was just varying degrees of cloud, however it did stay fine until we got back to the car.
Route Map
Having left the car near the pylon we made our way out onto Cunswick Fell. Although the sun was absent the views were still very good, here looking over Kendal Fell & Benson Knott to the magnificent Howgill Fells.
The path leads down to a wall corner to turn left along the undulating ridge with views here to the full length of the Whinfell Ridge which runs between the A6 and M6 and is one of the finest walks in the area.
Another of the Howgills which dominate the eastern skyline at this point.
We have now turned the corner and the route just follows the ridge northwards.
A touch of sun on Benson Knott.
I had expected to see more people out and about although most head for Scout Scar which we will visit next.
First views of the Coniston Fells as we make our way along the ridge.
A rather princely cairn for such a small fell. Maybe it was part of a job creation scheme ;-)
There were patches of sunlight on the fells of Kentmere but all in all a bit of a dull day.
A shaded Red Screes makes a dark backdrop for the sunlit Sallows and Sour Howes.
Patience is partially rewarded as sunlight catches Mardale Ill Bell.
The fells of Shap over Potter Fell.
The Howgills with the Plumgarth roundabout below.
Darker clouds over the Coniston Fells.
Hazy Langdale Fells.
From the cairn we made our way back to the car park using a path on the other side of the ridge.
It was our turn to catch the sun for a brief moment.
From the car park it was just a few yards along the road and then across it to access Scout Scar.
We didn't take the main path up onto the ridge, instead taking one off to the left which eventually brought us to...
....the mushroom-like shelter.
The views across the Lyth Valley towards the Coniston & Langdale Fells were no better from here....
....although the fells of Kentmere were now enjoying some sun.
A look back as we make our way to the trig point on Scout Scar.
We continued southwards for a while with the outline of Arnside Knott ahead.
After a while we left the ridge to walk down to the scar edge.
Looking over Barrowfield to the Coniston & Langdale fells which are looking a bit brighter now.
Our route back would simply follow the scar edge nortwards.
A spotlight on Arnside.
There's a few more folk on here than on Cunswick.
We are at the end of the scar now and the sun as disappeared from Kentmere....
...although Cunswick seems to be catching some.
And finally......back to the car.
