Walk No.5

Wainwright summits:            Dodd

Distance:                8.75 miles

Ascent:                   3090 feet

Time:                      5h 15m

Weather:                    Very windy at first but improving later.

We were staying in an holiday cottage at the Ravenstone Hotel so this walk was done from the doorstep so to speak. The original intention had been to do the Ullock Pike ridge and then onto Skiddaw but as we gained height along the ridge Edith wasn't to happy with the wind which at one point all but blew her off her feet. The decision was then made to descend back down and go up Dodd. Safety must be the No.1 priority on the fells and every one as there own level.

Here we are on the path to Ullock Pike. It was shortly after this that the decision to descend and go for Dodd was made.

As can be seen we had gained quite a bit of height by this point which would be all lost but safety is the priority.

Looking down and across Bassenthwaite Lake.

We are walking in Dodd wood now on our way to Dodd following the Skill Beck path to Long Doors.

As we neared the summit the views were rather atmospheric. The picture shows Keswick and Derwentwater with the sun filtering through.

Edith on the summit of Dodd. When we were last on this summit around 1990 it was covered in forest with little views. What a change for the better!

Dave on Dodd summit.

Bassenthwaite Lake from Dodd summit with the Wythop fells behind.

The Newland fells from Dodd.

A glistening Derwentwater from the descenst to the visitor centre. From there we followed a path through the woods which followed the road back to the hotel.
