Walk No.16

Stone Arthur, Heron Pike and Nab Scar

Date:         20th December 2006                    Distance:    7.75 miles                Ascent:    2501 feet                Time:    5h 15m

Weather:      Very murky in the valleys but glorious on the tops

Route:          We left the car at Grasmere and walked along the road to gain access to the fells from a lane behind the Swan Hotel.

As we set off I was thinking that todays walk would just be a quick visit to the summit and back.

The path to Stone Arthur starts from a lane behind the Swan Hotel.

Visibility at this point was virtually down to a few yards.

We were at about 1100' here and still nothing to see when all of a sudden.........

Within a few minutes and a short distance from the last picture we broke through into the most glorious weather.

The summit of Stone Arthur comes into view.

Helm Crag looking like a small island in a sea of white cloud.

Dave on Stone Arthur.

Any thoughts of a quick return to Grasmere were cast aside. We followed the ridge up to join the "Fairfield Horseshoe" path between Great Rigg and Heron Pike.

How high the cloud was can be seen here. Stone Arthur is the knobble in the centre foreground.

Dave on Heron Pike.

Taken from Heron Pike this shows the Helm Crag on the left, Steel Fell to the right with the Ullscarf ridge behind.

Edith on Nab Scar with the Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes behind.

From Nab Scar we descended to Rydal. Within a few minutes we were back in the cloud.

From Rydal we took the old Corpse route back to Grasmere. This shows Rydal Water from the path.

Next Walk:    31st January 2007 -- Lingmoor Fell from Elterwater

Last Walk:    18th December 2006 -- Helm Crag, Gibson Knott, Calf Crag and Steel Fell from Grasmere
