Walk No.35

Lank Rigg, Crag Fell and Grike

Date:            3rd June 2007                 Distance:    8.75 miles              Ascent:         2020 feet                   Time:            4h 30m

Weather:       A bit of a "murky" day....no rain and high clouds but the visibility was hazy

Route:           We left the car on the Cold Fell at a right angled left turn just before Blakeley Raise.

We left the car on the unfenced Cold Fell road

We took a track that rose a little at first before descending into the valley of the River Calder.

The path would take us to the col between Whoap and Lank Rigg just in sight on the left with Lank Rigg in the centre

THe lowest part of the skyline is where we are heading. With Whoap to the left

Higher up the valley now and looking back.

On the rising path to the col now with Lank Rigg to the right

Edith was finding it a wee bit hard today but will never give up.

I left Edith by the summit and walked over to see the Tumulus.

Having returned to the summit and picked Edith up we made our way back down to the col to take the rising path shown above towards Whoap

Looking back to Lank Rigg from the path up Whoap. We didn't go to the summit of Whoap but instead cut across to pick up the Ennerdale wall.

Approaching the Ennerdale Wall with the top of Bowness Knott overshadowed by Great Borne

Our path would take us into the forest to pick up a path which would take us to the summit of Crag Fell

It's just a pity the weather conditions weren't that good for taking pictures. Bowness Kott in the foreground with Great Borne, Starling Dodd, Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag behind.

From Crag Fell it was just a one mile walk to Grike shown ahead

Dave on Grike. From Grike we made our way down to a old mine road now a forest track.

We followed this track down to the Heckbarley exit onto the Cold Fell road.

From there it was 5 minute walk to the Kinniside Stone circle

and from there a 10 minute walk back to the car.

Next Walk:    5th June 2007 -- Slight Side and Scafell from Wha House farm

Last Walk:    2nd June 2007 -- Harter Fell and Hard Knott from Wha House farm
