Route: | Brown Howe - Stable Harvey - Beacon Fell - Beacon Tarn - Stable Harvey - Mill Bridge - Brown Howe |
By myself today and not feeling 100% so I decided to have a revisit to Beacon Fell. I parked the car at the roadside near Brown Howe and took the farm track up towards Stable Harvey. Before reaching there I took a well trodden track off to the left which led me eventually to the summit of Beacon Fell. From the summit I dropped down to the tarn below and followed that to it's southernmost end. From there I picked up the Cumbria Way which would lead me Northwards alongside the tarn initially back to Stable Harvey. I then continued on the Cumbria Way before leaving it to take a path past the disused reservoir to Mill Bridge. From there it was a case of just following the A5084 back to the car.
The farm track up to Stable Harvey.
On the rising path to Beacon Fell looking back towards Stable Harvey with Coniston Water on the right
Looking back to the Coniston Fells. The water you can see is the disused reservoir which I would visit later.
Wainwrights rock gulley? (Outlying Fells page 100) ...If so, what an imagination the man had.
Sunlight on Stable Harvey with Coniston Water to the right
Dow Crag and the Old Man remain in cloud

Looking to Caw from Beacon Fell
Black Combe from Beacon Fell
Descending to Beacon Tarn with Wool Knott at the end
Looking south down the tarn to Wool Knott
And now looking north along the tarn to Beacon Fell
I am now on the Cumbria Way following the west shore of the tarn northwards. This section was very wet until i reached the ridge just to the left of Beacon Fell in the distance.
But even I was going faster than these 4 young men on there Mountain Bikes. In the end I think they turned back to find another route.
I'm now at the ridge and taking a last look at Beacon Tarn.
and looking ahead towards the Conistons
The disused reservoir in the distance
Dow Crag and Coniston nearly cloud free at this point
I'm near Stable Harvey now and looking back to Beacon Fell
I'm still on the Cumbria Way at this point and the path is a lot drier here
Nearing the point where I left the Cumbria Way to go past the old reservoir with the Conistons in sunlight for a while
Never realised that this was virtually the same picture as the previous only a bit closer.........blame the age
At the reservoir now.....I'm sorry about the overhead electric cables but I can't seem to get rid of them
I wonder how many are slogging up the Old Man today?.......so far apart from the lads on bikes I have only seen 2 others
A close up of the Old Man.
and Dow Crag
My final bit of path before I reach Mill Bridge and the road
and finally looking up Coniston Water from the roadside.
