With Edith today to add another two "Wainwrights" to our second round total. We left the car at Patterdale and made our way to Lanty's Tarn from Grisedale. From the tarn we took a path alongside the wall running up the eastern flank of Birkhouse Moor. This is the wall that also leads to the Hole-in-the-wall and the majestic Striding edge. Before reaching there however our path moved away from the wall to take us to the summit of Birkhouse Moor. From there we made our way to the Hole-in-the wall to take a path to Red Tarn for a "butty stop" before ascending Catstycam. From Catstycam we descended into Greenside to take a path to Miresbeck and then to Glenridding. After a welcome cuppa and scone there we made our way back to Patterdale.
We left the car in a lay-by at Patterdale. It had been a frosty night but there was no signs of any ice as we came over the Kirkstone Pass
Any mist that had been in the valley bottom had cleared by the time we arrived
As we walked towrds Grisedale I got this picture of Birkhouse Moor
Looking up Grisedale from the bridge over Grisedale Beck
On the path to Lanty's Tarn and looking back to Grisedale
Reflections on or in Lanty's Tarn
The start of our path from Lanty's Tarn to Birkhouse Moor
Looking back to Place Fell
A little higher and a view to Gowbarrow Fell and Ullswater
And to Glenridding Dodd and Sheffield Pike
And the other way to Birks and St.Sunday Crag
Gaining height all the time opened up the views even more. Gowbarrow Fell, Ullswater and The Knight on Place Fell with the North Pennines in the distance
Arnison Crag (front right) with the Angletarn Pikes and High Street fells behind
A peek over the wall into Grisedale
Still some way to go but the cross wall of Hole-in-the-wall fame comes into view in the distance
I know, I know, you've seen something similar earlier but with height it just got better
A close up of one of the Ullswater steamers heading back to Glenridding
Looking back
Edith on Birkhouse Moor with Helvellyn and Catstycam behind
And t'other one
Looking over Glenridding Dodd the northern end of Ullswater is now in view along with the N. Pennines
A look into Keppel Cove with Catstycam on the left and White Side in the centre
On our way to the Hole-in-the wall and looking to Helvellyn
And to White Side and Raise
Looks like another quiet day on Striding Edge!!.......The Hole-in-the-wall
The path to/from Glenridding with Catstycam.
Oooops!!!!.......nearly the same but taken from the path to Red Tarn
Red Tarn and Helvellyn.......this was our "butty stop"
The path to Swirral Edge and our ascent route to Catstycam
A popular picnic spot .....this group of young ladies were reluctant to leave.
This is the half-way point of the walk and the photos I will do Part 2 later
