Route: | Patterdale - Lanty's Tarn - Birkhouse Moor - Red Tarn - Catstycam - Glenridding - Patterdale |
With Edith today to add another two "Wainwrights" to our second round total. We left the car at Patterdale and made our way to Lanty's Tarn from Grisedale. From the tarn we took a path alongside the wall running up the eastern flank of Birkhouse Moor. This is the wall that also leads to the Hole-in-the-wall and the majestic Striding edge. Before reaching there however our path moved away from the wall to take us to the summit of Birkhouse Moor. From there we made our way to the Hole-in-the wall to take a path to Red Tarn for a "butty stop" before ascending Catstycam. From Catstycam we descended into Greenside to take a path to Miresbeck and then to Glenridding. After a welcome cuppa and scone there we made our way back to Patterdale.
We walked up from the tarn to the Swirral Edge ridge to gain access to Catstycam
Looking down to Red Tarn with the start of Striding Edge behind
There was plenty of noise coming across the tarn from Striding Edge.
Someone was urging another member of this group to get a move on but not quite in those words
Meanwhile we were taking the more sedate route to Catstycam
The old dam in Brown Cove
Looking between White Side (l) and Raise (r) to the Skiddaws and Dodd with the Scottish hills in the distance
Between Little Man and White Side to an array of fells which include High Tove, Causey Pike, Sail , Grasmoor, Grisedale Pike, Ard Crag and many, many more
Catstycam is one of my favourite summits, a true summit offering views in all directions but this is one of the best. Looking down to Greenside and Ullswater
Birkhouse Moor in the foreground with Place Fell behind and the northern High St fells behind that. In the far distance the N. Pennines
Further to the right....Birks, Hartsop Dodd, Gray Crag and the High St
Looking over the the southern slope of Raise to Skiddaw.......Is that a cloud or a smoke signal?
The zig-zag path from Keppel Cove with Raise behind and Stybarrow Dodd to the right
The old dam at Keppel Cove. Try "Googling" it for a tale of destuction
Helvellyn and Swirral Edge from Catstycam
A big bird
Together on Catstycam......courtesy of a gentleman we chatted to for a while
Descending back towards the tarn. My actual route plan had been to go down the Eastern shoulder but not wanting to aggravate an already sore hamstring I decided this way would be easier.
Descending to Greenside with Sheffield Pike ahead
Looking into Keppel Cove with White Side (l) and Raise (r)
Notice the zig-zag like path in the centre of the picture? This is the remains of an old "Leat" which were used to move water around the fellsides
Most of the tracks in this area were originally miners paths. You can see the path zig-zagging up Stang End which leads to the old quarries at Green Side and to the Sticks Pass.
Greenside......Home to the Helvellyn YHA and an assortment of Outdoor Education buildings. The path we are walking along now is a disused leat which runs around the fellside towards Miresbeck.
Staying on this side of Glenridding Beck keeps the views longer than walking down the Greenside Road opposite. Glenridding and Place fell are shown centre picture.
Here we are dropping down to the lower path near the wall to go to Miresbeck with delicous views to Keldas and Angletarn Pikes
Having descended to Miresbeck and Gillside we followed the beck down into Glenridding
After a cuppa and scone in Glenridding we made our way back to Patterdale with a detour to waterside. Arnison Crag across the water.
A look back to Glenridding and it's Dodd
Looking to the Angletarn Pikes on the way back to Patterdale
and finally back to Patterdale
