Route: | Lancaster Riverside path - Canal aqueduct - Water Witch - Lancaster centre - Castle & Priory - Riverside path |
Just another short local walk today as continuing problems with the foot and an afternoon meet up with friends restricted us from going far. We left the car near Skerton Bridge at Lancaster and took the riverside path northwards unti we reached the Lancaster Aqueduct which carries the Lancaster Canal over the River Lune. We climbed up to join the canal path and followed this into and nearly through Lancaster leaving the canal at the Water Witch. We walked down through the town which was filling up with Christmas shoppers and made our way to the Castle and Priory from where we returned to the car via the Roman Baths and riverside path.
Not a very good first picture but this is the River Lune from where we left the car.
The weir near Halton. This marks the end of the tidal section of the River Lune. There was plenty of fresh water running over the weir , not surprising after all the rain we have been having of late.
The Lune Aqueduct. Completed in 1797 at a cost of £48,320 18s 10d it was designed by John Rennie and is 600' long, 60' high with five semi-circular arches.
Looking down the River Lune from the aqueduct.
From here we followed the canal towpath into Lancaster
A close up of the Ashton Memorial in Williamson Park
Reflections
The footbridge is from the Lansil Golf Clubhouse over to the Links
We saw a number of Kingfishers as we walked along but all were moving to fast for a picture
A close up of the Castle from the canal
St. Peters Catholic Cathedral. More info here
The Water Witch. A lovely place to stop and linger in the summertime. The buildings behind are part of the Royal Lancaster Infirmary
There as been massive development of what is known as the canal corridor and it is still ongoing. This is where we left the canal to walk through the city.
Lancaster Town Hall and look at the time......we best get a wiggle on!
Lancaster Castle and the John O' Gaunt gateway. The castle as a fantastic history, why not spend a few minutes browsing it. Just click HERE, it will open in a seperate page.
Part of the Castle is still used as a prison but other parts are open with guided tours
Well worth a visit if your in the area.......just say Dave sent you and they'll add summat on!
Adjacent to the Castle is the Priory which doesn't really lean like that......just my photographic skills. Once again lots of history here......take a LOOK
On the way back to the riverside we passed the remains of a Roman Bath-house
The Millenium Bridge. It actually opened in 2001 and the two pylons are meant to represent the masted ships which visited the quay in years gone by
Skerton Bridge which carries the A6 over the River Lune. It used to be 2 way but now only carries traffic into Lancaster, an old railway bridge was modified to carry outward traffic.
