Just as one problem (the foot) seems to be clearing up an old friend in the form of mild sciatica reappears. Many years ago when I had this my old GP used to tell me to place a stiff sheet of plywood in the bed to lay on and stay there a few days. Nowadays the advice is to move about as much as possible which when dosed up with Co-Codamol is closer to my thinking. It was with this in mind that we had this short walk.
We left the car near the canal at Borwick on a fine and sunny morning.
Someone seems to have come to blows with the Borwick Bridge.
A well kept waterside garden
This section of the canal towpath as not had a man made path put down as yet.
Approaching Tewitfield which is the end of the navigable section of the canal.
The canal here was "culverted" under the road when the M6 was built
A walk under the motorway bridge next to the busy M6 brings us to
the Northern Reaches. A stretch of canal which originally had 8 locks along an half mile stretch, the only locks on the Lancaster Canal (excluding the branch down to Glasson Dock)
The locks have now been replaced by weirs
It's a lovely walk along here despite the constant noise from the M6 which lays only a few yards to the left
Some of the old lock gates
You see!.....I did tell you there were eight.
Another section of the canal which was culverted to pass under the M6
It is possible to carry on walking the canal at the other side of the M6 but this would be our turning point today. This is the M6 near Burton in Kendal services with the sign that those travelling to Lakeland means "not far now"
On the way back at Tewitfield we left the canal briefly to visit the Longlands Hotel. There is a major canalside development going on behind the hotel.
Behind the canal boat is the development I spoke of earlier. There are 5 blocks of 1,2 & 3 bed-roomed apartments being built around a small central marina which will be linked into the canal.
And finally back to the car
Next walk: 16th December 2007 -- A short walk at Kirkby Lonsdale
