Another short walk today as the Sciatica is still playing up. We combined the walk with a some Christmas shopping in Kirkby Lonsdale.
We left the car near Devils Bridge which is a popular spot with the motor cyclists. Today it was very quiet, maybe something to do with how cold it was.
Devil's Bridge......14 Century bridge across the River Lune.
The three-arched Devil's Bridge got its name from an old tale, in which the devil was outsmarted. Supposedly built by the Devil (but most likely by the monks), a widow needed to use the bridge to reach her cow on the other side. The Devil's payment was the possession of the first soul to cross the bridge. The widow had her dog cross first therefore outwitting the Devil.
The road bridge that carries the busy A65 across the River Lune
Looking upriver from Devil's Bridge.
We are on the riverside path to Ruskins View now and looking back to view both bridges
A few woolly characters take an early lunch.
After a few fine days the river level as dropped. A week or so ago it would have been a quite different picture
Walking along what is known as the Mill Ayre area with The Island on the right
Leaving the riverside path to go to Ruskins View
Christmas Quiz.......Fill in the gaps! Actually there are 86 steps and its "Take it Easy". Why they are called the Radical Steps I do not know. They were built in 1819 by Francis Pearson and every step upwards today was painfull!!
At Ruskins View
In case you can't make it out. Ruskin said in 1875 that the view from here was the one of the finest in England, therefore in the world. Well I guess he had a better day than us. Seriously, in the summertime it is a beautiful sight but in my humble opinion far from the best in England.
Looking down onto The Island
From Ruskins View we followed the path through the woods to Underley Park
Barbon Fell from Underley Park
Well they say that "framing" your picture is important. Middleton & Bardon Fells from the way back to Kirkby Lonsdale.
St Mary's Church at Kirkby Lonsdale
Main Street , Kirkby Lonsdale with The Sun Inn where I did my Christmas shopping leaving Edith to the more conventional locations
The village did look very seasonal.
The village square
On our way down Jingling Lane back to the car. Unfortunately the "chippie" was closed
Back to Devil's Bridge. There were a few more bikes by now but not that many
And finally back to the car.
