Route:   Raven's Lodge - Whitbarrow - Flodder Hall - Gilpin Bridge

We didn't want to venture too far today as we might be needed on the "school run" in the afternoon so it was a quick dart up the M6 and along the A591/A590 to near Gilpin Bridge. Normally we would go up the A6 to Levens and then along the A590 to Gilpin Bridge but as we were going along the promenade at Morecambe there was a news flash on Radio Cumbria that the A6 north of Milnthorpe at Heversham was closed due to a serious accident. We were parked up and booted up for 09:30hrs and set off towards Raven's Lodge to take a path through the old quarry which eventually meets up with a rising path through the woods onto the ridge. Our path followed the ridge N'wards taking us into the Hervey Nature reserve and then onto the highest point "Lords Seat" with its delightful cairn. As we had not visited the Lyth valley for some time and Edith is getting increasingly desperate to see some lambs we decided on a return down into the valley to Flodder Hall farm and returned to Gilpin Bridge along farm lanes.

The southern end of Whitbarrow known as White Scar from near the car.

Raven's Lodge

Walking through the old quarry workings.

Eventually we met up with this narrow rising path which took us onto the ridge

Clear of the trees now and looking back towards Newton Fell

Looking down into the valley to Kirket Nook farm which is farmed by one of Ediths cousins.

Looking S'wards to Arnside Knott and Morecambe Bay.

and N'wards along the scar towards the summit.

Looking across the Lyth Valley to Scout Scar with the Whinfell Ridge behind

A very faint rainbow leaves its pot of gold near Witherslack Hall in the valley bottom

The Eastern & Far Eastern Fells in close up.

The Kendal Scars and Whinfell Ridge

Entering the Hervey Nature reserve.

The splendid summit cairn on Lord's Seat.

Looking N'wards to Kirkstone.

The Langdale Pikes catch a little sun allowing a close up shot.

We usually descend into the Witherslack side of Whitbarrow but decided to drop down into the Lyth Valley today using a variety of paths including this forest track (not all of them are RoW)

Looking across the Lyth Valley, known best for its damsons towards Scout Scar.

"Spreading a little goodness"

This is what Edith wanted. Our first Cumbrian lambs of 2008 not Herdwicks but Cumbrian nevertheless!

"We're not coming out until you put that camera away!"

White Scar from near Gilpin Bridge

And finally.....The Gilpin Bridge Inn.....only a couple of minutes away from the car.
