Route: | Newby Bridge - Summer House Knott - Finsthwaite - High Dam - Finsthwaite - Lakeside - Newby Bridge |
I was by myself today but not wanting to push my luck with the hip I plumped for another one of AW's Outlying Fells , Finsthwaite Heights with the delicous High Dam. This may actually be a place that I beat AW to as I first walked up to High Dam as a 13 year old in 1957 with a now passed on Uncle of mine who was a keen walker. High Dam is considered by many people including Wainwright himself to be far better than Tarn Hows to the north. Wainwright says in his Outlying Fells of Lakeland book "it is a much nicer place than the over-populated Tarn Hows" and I for one would not challenge that statement.
I left the car on the Newby Bridge - Finsthwaite road near the railway line from where I got this picture of the weir on the River Leven.
A passing duck decided to try to mess up my reflection picture.
The path up Summer House Knott
Finsthwaite Tower
From the tower I used a permissive path that eventually joined on to the Finsthwaite - Lakeside path which I followed to Finsthwaite shown here.
In Finsthwaite I took a path sloping upwards which would join on to the main path. Gummers How is in the distance.
Crossing the footbridge to join the main path up.
I had taken a permissive path which by-passed Low Dam to arrive at the delectable High Dam which was frozen.
With the school holidays there were plenty of stones out on the ice.
I decided to walk around the tarn before descending
This memorial seat at the far end of the tarn was probably my highest point of the day.
Looking down onto High Dam from the seat ....taken into the sun
My only disappointment was that the reflections were not as good as I was hoping for due to the ice.
From High Dam I took the main path down to Low Dam.
This huge bobbin with a relef map of the area on top explains what the tarns and woods were for.........Bobbin production
Back to the church at Finsthwaite
I took the Finsthwaite - Lakeside path through Great Knott wood
Windermere from Lakeside
Gummers How from Lakeside.
The MV Tern at lakeside.
From Lakeside I took a permissive path through the woods adjacent to the road back to Newby Bridge.
Water Side Knott from the bridge.
The Swan Hotel from the bridge.
And finally.....back to the car with the Lakeside - Haverthwaite railway line above it.
