Again not wishing to travel far we headed for The Forest of Bowland and the delightful Littledale.
From where we left the car. Caton Moor with its windfarm. From here we would drop down into Littledale
Pott Yeats farm as we dropped down to the valley
Udale Beck and bridge. Udale Beck and Foxdale Beck unite just downstream of here and become Artle Beck which flows down to the River Lune
New House Farm
As we followed the narrow lane we passed through the hamlet of Crosgill where we passed the former Chapel of St Ann (1751) now a private residence
The path from Crossgill was very wet and slippy in places as we made our way up the valley
The forgotten church. It stands alone in a field and was built in 1849 by John Dodson whose remains lie in the only grave. The building itself is now used as a barn.
The solitary grave
Looking down on Littledale Hall to which we would return via a lower path later
Looking back to the old church from further up the valley
We had to be careful along this section ad the path was very slippy
We have dropped down to the beck at this point and will return to Littledale Hall along the beckside
The woods were full bluebells shooting up. We will have to try and get back when they are in flower
Back at Littledale Hall. Built around 1840-1850 by John Dodson (remember the old church) who was Vicar of Cockerham and son of a Liverpudlian shipping magnate. Ourroute would take us over the bridge.
Footbridge over Foxdale Beck on our way to Field Head Farm
Dow Crag & Coniston Old Man from Field Head farm. (28.8 miles)
Looking towards Wards Stone , the highest point in Bowland
Dropping down to Bellhill farm
Our path would take us up to the path that can be seen sloping upwards to the right
But first a muddy track near Uldale Beck
Looking back to Caton Moor
We are now skirting the northern flank of Clougha Pike
In the foreground two people walking on Baines Crag (0.75mls), Grange and Hamsfell in mid-picture (14.5mls) and White Pike, White Maiden , Brown Pike, Buck Pike and Dow Crag (28.8mls) in the distance.
Newly burnt heather......we had noticed it being burnt a few days ago
Our highest point of the day. We did toy with going up to Clougha Pike but decided not to.
Grouse butt with Black Combe across Morecambe Bay
We picked up the shooters track to descend by
Descending on the shooters track. We would leave it just round the cornere to take the path going up by the side of the wood
Walking back to the car with a view towards Wards Stone
And finally.....back to the car which now had company.
