Thr area around Hornby and Wray is quite interesting. Hornby itself is sat fair and square in the Lune Valley and many people travelling through it would think that the bridge there crosses the River Lune. In fact it is the River Wenning which starts life as Clapham Beck , Austwick Beck and Fell Beck in the Yorkshire Dales. To the east of Hornby lies the village which as the River Roeburn and River Hindburn flowing through it before joining together to join the River Wenning near Hornby. Our walk would take us past all these through delightful countryside.

The Loyn Bridge from where we parked the car. The raised banking across the river is shown on the map as "Castle Stede" Motte & Bailey.

Looking downriver from Loyn Bridge. Our return path would be through the woods on the left.

And upriver from the bridge. When we returned here in mid aftrnoon there was a group of young teens swimming here.....can't be that warm yet!!

Our path from the car had brought us past Holme Head farm belowand through the gate on the right.

Edith in her "Pied Piper" role as we ascend Windy Bank

The weather around the southern lakes seemed brighter

Windy Bank Barn

Edith follows me to the top of Windy Bank....the only reason I'm in front is that she stopped to take her fleece off

Windy Bank Trig Point. No oxygen needed here at the princely height of 406 feet this would be our highest point. However all the ups and downs would accrue nearly a 1000 feet of climbing.

Walking back to the barn to get back on the R of W with Barbon Low Fell and Middleton Fell in the distance

Our path took us past Park House farm

and down to Tatham Church

Tatham Bridge

The River Wenning from Tatham Bridge

Our route then took us up Park Lane which in reality is no more than a farm track. Here we are looking back from where we have come. Windy Bank Barn can be seen on the skyline just right of centre.

A close up of Hornby Castle

Looking towards Claughton Moor. The wind turbines on Caton Moor can just be seen behind.

Descending again towards Gamblesholme

Gamblesholme Farm complete with old water pump

The River Hindburn

We arrived at the delightful village of Wray to find it overun with people. The bridge is Wray Bridge and this is the River Roeburn.......still with me?

The River Roeburn

And this is why the village is so busy. It is the Wray Village Scarecrow Festival & Fair, an annual event .....for more info click HERE it will open in a new page

The River Roeburn from Kitten Bridge as we had a look around the village at the scarecrows.

I will be putting the pictures of the scarecrows on the website when I get chance they will be located in the "Other Pictures" section.

The village was very busy....there is plenty of parking for visitors but these are only narrow country lanes so patience is required . It took our son & family nearly an hour to do the final 2 miles into the village.

We then made our way back to Hornby

No Bank Holidays for the farmer

Approaching Hornby

Hornby Bridge over the River Wenning.

The river from Hornby Bridge

From Hornby our path would follow the River Wenning to where it joined the River Lune. From there we would follow the Lune upstream back to Loyn Bridge

This is the point where the R.Wenning flows into the River Lune.

Passing Priory Farm on our way back to the car

And finally......back to Loyn Bridge
