By myself again today. Edith is getting better by the day but not yet ready for any uphill work.
I had left the car just off the A590 on the old road and took a path past Low Fell End farm towards Whitbarrow
Looking back to Low Fell End farm
Once on the Mill Side - Ravens Lodge bridleway I turned left for a few yards before taking this permissive path up through Buckhouse Wood
A peek over the Kent estuary to Arnside Knott through a gap in the trees
Before long I was out onto the open fellside
My path ahead
As I got higher onto the ridge the Lakeland Fells came into view with the Conston & Langdale Fells here
My way along the ridge with the Langdales to the left, Fairfield centre and High Street fells right.
Looking down to Witherslack Hall (School) in the woods
A look back to Arnside Knott
Lord's Seat summit cairn with Red Screes to its left
A close up of the Coniston Fells
and of the Langdale Fells
The Fairfield Horseshoe and Red Screes
A windswept tree with the Whinfell Ridge behind
From the summit cairn I just kept to the highest ground until I picked up the crosswall. There was a cuckoo making one heck of a racket in these trees
At the crosswall it is simply a case of left turn to pick up Bell Rake
Don't forget to look for the old mine level on the way down , it's right next to the path
The top of Bell Rake, steep in places but in the main a good path.
At the bottom turn left along the permissive path , it's far better than walking down the road as Wainwright had to do.
Follow the permissive path until emerges into the open near Witherslack Hall
Witherslack school playing field with Chapel Head Scar behind. My path is the one leading into the woods on the right.
Sniff!!!.........mmmmmm lovely.........Wild Garlic in High Crag Wood
Honesty eggs at Beck Head
Edith loves this area. She spent all the school summer holidays near here at her Uncles farm.
Beck Head.....a picture of loveliness
Mill Side
"Teddy" stands guard at Mill side
And finally .....back to the car. When I left here at 9:15am I was the only one parked . On my return I counted 27 cars. As most people do the walk in the same direction as I had done I only met 3 people on the top.
Next Walk: 19th May 2008 -- Humphrey Head from Kents Bank
Last walk: 15th May 2008 -- Arnside Knott from Silverdale
