Edith was wanting a walk today but one with not much climbing. I decided that Humphrey Head one of Wainwrights Outlying Fells would suit. Why AW decided to put this in the Outlying Fells book is beyond me but I have to admit that it was a pleasant walk.
The view towards Allithwaite from where we left the car
We then walked down to the railway station at Kents Bank
Kents Bank railway station
Having crossed the railway line our path followed the railway embankment towards Humphrey Head seen ahead
A look back over the Kent estuary towards Arnside Knott
Making our way round Kirkhead End
The path hugs the shoreline
Approaching Wyke Farm
Humphrey Head from Wyke Farm
A look back to Kirkhead End with Ingleborough in the distance
A package of laminated flooring washed up on the shore....Maybe from the MV Riverdance?
We followed the shore to pick up AW's path up through the woods but the path became quite wet so decided to retrace our track and take the Cumbria Coastal Way to the other side and then access the head from the Outdoor Centre
We are now on the Head and the Outdoor Centre is on the right
Looking back to the Outdoor Centre
Looking west over the Leven estuary towards Ulverston. The Hoad with the Sir John Barrow Monument can be seen in the centre of the picture. The monument is a copy of the Eddystone Lighthouse.
Humphrey Head Trig point
Looking across Morecambe Bay to home
A distant Ingleborough
The trees along the top show which direction the prevailing winds are
After leaving the Head we returned to Wyke Farm and took the Cumbria Coastal Way to Allithwaite
A look back to Humphrey Head
A close up of the tower on Kirkhead. As anybody been up to it?....There are no ROW's marked on the map but one day I'll have a wander up.
Entering Allithwaite at The Pheasant Inn
The Guide Over Sands pub which as a picture of Cedric Robinson who carries the title of the " Queen's Sand Pilot"
And finally......back to the car.
