I was by myself today as Edith wanted to catch up with some gardening before we head north to the Lake District for a week. I did meet a fellow fellwalker between Winder and Arant Haw, a gentleman we had met on Arnside Knott a few weeks ago and also on the promenade at Morecambe where we both live.....small world.

Winder and Arant Haw from near Lily Mere

St Andrews Church at Sedbergh with Winder behind. The church is probably the oldest building in Sedbergh dating back to 1130

A short walk up the road soon had me at the permissive path to Lockbank Farm

Looking down on Lockbank Farm with Holme Knott the northernmost point of Middleton Fell across the valley

I had followed the intake wall to this point but left it here to get onto the ridge of Winder

A look back

The way ahead to Winder

Winder summit with Trig point and Millenium Cairn. Arant Haw in the distance.

Looking over The Nab of Arant Haw towards the Lune Gorge

The way ahead to Arant Haw

And what would be the final summit of the walk , Crook.

A look back to Winder as I make my way to Arant Haw

As  I made my way to Arant Haw I noticed a figure stting before the final rise. If you look very carefully you will a dark spot near the juncture of paths.

Looking down into Crosdale

At this point I had met up with the seated figure and we were walking towards Arant Haw with a look back to Winder.

Please let me introduce Sid, a fellow Morecambrian and only one week short of his 82nd birthday. We first met him on Arnside Knott a while ago and since then have seen him and his wife on the promenade at Morecambe. He is a regular walker on the Howgill Fells having forsaken the Lakeland Fells to "save" the joints. A most pleasant walking companion.

We walked in a NE'ly direction from Arant Haw to meet up with the main path to Calders and The Calf. From there we turned SW'ly towards Sedbergh.

Walking towards Sedbergh with Winder ahead and Settlebeck Gill centre.

This is where Sid and I parted ways....he was heading back towards Winder and Howgill Lane

While I took a faint path to Crook.

Crook summit with Arant Haw behind. The summit cairn is probably the biggest on the Howgills

Winder from Crook

From Crook it was simply a case of heading towards Winder until Settlebeck Gill was reached

Then follow it down towards Sedbergh

Crossing it just above the intake wall.....a very dry gill today

Having crossed the gill a look back to Crook

The Kissing Gate in the Intake Wall

All downhill to Sedbergh

Hill farm

A last look at Winder before entering Joss Lane

Sedbergh Main Street....sadly all the cobbles have been tarmacced over

Wednesday is market day in Sedbergh

Sedbergh School playing fields

And finally.....back to the car park. This one used to be free but it's now £3.50 for 4 hours.. Free parking up Howgill Lane though!!

Next Walk:     24th May 2008 -- Sale Fell from Wythop Mill
