A Bank Holiday Sunday in Buttermere means getting there early for a parking space. We were parked up for around 9am in the NT Car Park near the old quarry. Our route was straight up the fellside to gain the ridge and then to follow it along to the summit. At the summit we had the choice of descending to Rannerdale or to retrace our footsteps along the ridge. We picked the second option so as to maintain the fantastic views for as long as possible.

Rannerdale Knotts from Lanthwaite Green

Looking across Crummock Water to Mellbreak which hopefully we would climb later in the week.

Looking back to the car park as we start the climb up to the ridge

Taken partly into the morning sun the view up Buttermere

The view across the end of Crummock Water to Mellbreak, Hen Comb and Floutern Cop

Gaining height and looking across to Red Pike, High Stile and High Crag

Higher up the Buttermere valley Haystacks is overshadowed by Great Gable

On the ridge now and it was quite blustery. The summit is in the distance with Mellbreak behind and Low Fell in the far distance

Grasmoor

From near the summit looking to Mellbreak

Low Fell in the distance

Grasmoor and the Lad hows ridge

A breezy Rannerdale Knotts summit

Note the "swept-back" haircut designed by A.Breeze.

Returning along the ridge with High Snockrigg and Robinson ahead.

A look down Rannerdale. The bluebells could still be seen but were fast being overtaken by the new growth of bracken.

Descending to Buttermere. There were cars all along the Newlands road by this time.

.....and more were still arriving!

And finally ......back to an overflowing car park.
