After having done the shortish walk up Rannerdale Knotts we returned to the car to take a little weight out of our rucsacs before walking down to Buttermere to do a circuit of the mere.
Walking down to Buttermere we passed this lovely residence which I seem to recall being a cafe many years ago.
The Bridge Hotel at Buttermere
St James' Church at Buttermere of which Wordsworth wrote "A man must be very insensible who would not be touched with pleasure at the sight of the chapel of Buttermere."
The Wainwright window overlooking Haystacks. The window was recently damaged by storms but the fellwalking community rallied around and the full cost of repairs to this window and others was generously donated.
A short walk back down the road took us to the cafe where we stopped for a bite to eat.
Buttermere was very busy with walkers and tourists going in all directions.
As we walked down to the waterside a glance over to Mellbreaks' Scale Knott with Hen Comb behind
High Snockrigg
Not the best of pictures as it was taken directly into the sunlight but it shows Fleetwith Pike at the head of the valley
A look backwards towards the Grasmoor Fells
Plenty of young ones enjoying the pools and small falls in a rather dry looking Comb Beck
Getting near to the end of the mere.
Fleetwith Pike
Looking down the valley from Peggy's Bridge. The small fell at the end is Rannerdale Knotts where we had been earlier
Approaching Gatesgarth Farm and looking forward to something cool
Haystacks.....I wonder how many are up there today?
Yummy!!!.....A big one please!
Gatesgath farm
A look back as we make our way back to Buttermere
Looking across Buttermere to Burtness Wood with High Stile and Red Pike
Approaching the Hassness Tunnel. A 30 metre tunnel reputedly cut by hand by the workers at Hassness in the 19th Century to keep them employed during the winter months.
Approaching Buttermere
Wilkinsyke farm
And finally ....a return to a very overcrowded car park
