I have been wanting to do this walk for some time but didn't know how I would feel taking on 12+ miles at the present time. We were last here in the mid 90's but I wasn't quite sure which year until we reached Rylstone Cross and saw the plate on it. The paths are good most of them being shooters tracks. The section between High Bark and Bartlle Crag which takes in the Cross and Obelisk can be wet in sections after rain but we had no problems at all.
The start of the walk at Black Hill was on the bridleway to Rylstone.
This picture shows most but not all of our route. We would follow the bridleway over the rise to the left to the farthest point seen then follow the skline round to the right before descending via the two reservoirs.
Lower Barden Reservoir
Dogs are welcome but with conditions
As regular readers will know I'm no fan of this but it is what keeps the moors maintained. The heather is regularly burnt to promote new growth
We are now somewhere near the top of that rise I mentioned in the second picture and looking back to where we had come from.
Upper Barden Reservoir is now in view.
But we still have some distance to go before we leave the bridleway at the skyline
We have now arrived at the point where we leave the bridleway. It is simply a case of turn right to follow the wall along.
Looking back down to where we left the bridleway with Hellifield Crag shown.
A look across the valley to Flasby Fell
Approaching Rylstone Cross
Rylstone Cross
We last came here just after the cross had been replaced
Our next objective, the Obelisk on Watt Crag
In the far distance Buckden Pike (l) and Great Whernside (r)
A look back to the cross as we walk to the Obelisk
An old boundary stone on the way
The Obelisk
Roll of Honour
A close up of Buckden Pike (l) and Great Whernside (r) with the village of Grassington on the far right.
Our way ahead was to follow the wall then round the back of the lump on the right.
I think this was the only point where we could see both reservoirs at the same time.......just!
A look back to the Obelisk and the only other person we saw on our walk.
Wonderful Wharfedale.....I think we may visit Buckden Pike again soon.....Great Whernside maybe.
This was taken from our "butty stop" and shows Grimwith Reservoir across the valley
Edith takes in the views whilst enjoying the "butties"
A look back as we make our way to the top reservoir
The track takes us past this old chimney and a small unnamed reservoir.
Un-named reservoir
A glimpse of the lower reservoir as we make our way to the upper. Our start point can be seen at the top of the track on the far right.
Upper Barden reservoir
A look up to the Obelisk.
Edith waits patiently by the old reservoir house.
The reservoir dam.
Making our way down to the lower reservoir
Lower Barden reservoir
Walking back to the car and looking back to Broad Park House.
And finally ......back to the car.
