I was by myself today and made an earlyish start to try and get the walk in before the weather took a turn for the worse. In the event the clouds rolled in a little earlier than I had hoped but the rain did manage to hold off until the last 30 minutes of the walk. Wainwright says that Green Quarter Fell is a featureless grassy height with one redeeming feature which is a perfect view of Upper Kentmere and it was for this view that I did this walk. In his book "The Outlying Fells of Lakeland" Wainwrights walk is 4.75miles long with 1000 feet of ascent. This walk is a little longer and with a bit more ascent as I wanted also to see the views into Longsleddale.
Sallows and the Garburn Pass from near the church at Kentmere.
Walking up to the hamlet of Green Quarter
On arrival at Green Quarter I took the bridleway to Cocklaw Fell and Sadgill. The bridleway skirts around the southern end of Green Quarter Fell.
A look back as I gain height. The day was improving all the time at this point and I thought I was in for some superb views
The sun was starting to warm the valley mist which was rising over Sallows
Having rounded the southern end of Green Quarter Fell the bridleway turns NE'ly . The highest point of Green Quarter Fell, Hollow Moor at 1394 feet is ahead of me but first a detour.....
Even though I ended up with my trousers soaked with the wet long grass a visit to Skeggles Water can't be missed.
Skeggles Water with Capplebarrow and Ancrow Brow behind
From Skeggles Water I retraced my steps (another soaking) before heading up the gentle slopes of Hollow Moor
A look back across Skeggles Water to the distant Howgills
The summit of Hollow Moor comes into view and the views of Upper Kentmere start to appear.
Unfortunately the clouds had thickened and the sun had more or less disappeared.
Looking down on Kentmere from Hollow Moor with Sallows on the left of the Garburn Pass
Yoke, Ill Bell, Froswick and Thornthwaite Crag dominate the western side of Upper Kentmere
The Kentmere Horseshoe
The slopes of Harter Fell and Kentmere Pike
From Hollow Moor I stayed on Wainwrights route to the nameless summit at 1370 feet
Shipman Knots from the nameless summit
A look back to Hollow Moor. It was at this point that I left Wainwrights route.
I dropped down S'wards to pick up the bridleway over Cocklaw Fell
At first when these guys set off towards me I thought I was going to be stampeeded (is that a word?) In fact they were only coming for a drink apart from this nosy youngster.
A look back as I make my way over Cocklaw Fell
A second lot of views of a valley very dear to me, Longsleddale
Looking across to Stockdale.
A look down to Sadgill.
Now it's payback time. To enjoy these views meant me dropping between 300 & 400 feet and now it was time to climb back up the Sadgill to Stile End bridleway.
At the top of the bridleway now with Wray Crag and Shipman Knotts to the right
The descent to Stile End. It was just starting to rain now and within a couple of minutes I had to put the waterproof jacket on. No need for the trousers, I was still wet from the long grass.
Still raining. Pity, it's a wonderfull view from here
Back down to Stile End and High lane for one quick picture
And finally ......back to the church
