Wainwright wrote in Book 4 of his Pictorial Guides to the Lakeland Fells, " South and west from Green Crag the scenery quickly deteriorates."  One can only assume that at that time (circa 1959)  he had not walked upon these delicous fells. He goes some way to correcting this by saying of Caw in his "Outlying Fells of Lakeland book" , "The view is one of depth as well as of distance, the abrupt summit being sufficiently elevated above its supporting slopes to give an uninterupted downhill view into the deep enclosing valleys of the Duddon and the Lickle".

Hesk Fell with The Pike on the right and Whitfell to the left from Kiln Bank

Hoses farm with the Duddon estuary in the distance

On the Park Head road

Brock Barrow

A look back to Stickle Pike

As we passed Brock Barrow the views into the top of the Duddon valley opened up. From the left, Harter Fell with Slight Side behind, Esk Pike , Bowfell and the Crinkle Crags. In the foreground is Wallowbarrow Crag.

A close up of Esk Pike, Bowfell , Crinkle Crags and Little Stand.

Caw

We left the Park Head road at this point to take the old quarry track up the northern flank. The Park Head road carries on down to Seathwaite in the Duddon valley.

At the end of the quarry road are the ruins of some stone buildings and the entrance to this level. At this point the path makes it way up the fellside.

Grey Friar is to the left with the Seathwaite Tarn service road visible. The point on the skyline in centre picture is Dow Crag which shows a much gentler side to the west.

Grey Friar with Great Carrs and Swirl How to the right

A close up of Devoke Water. Pity about Winscale behind.

We are just below the summit now and the views to the south have opened up. Black Combe is in the distance with the point of Stickle Pike below it.

Looking down the Duddon estuary towards Barrow & Walney Island

Just up there!

Edith on Caw

A distant view of Wasdale with Yebarrow in the centre and Haycock, Red Pike, Scoat Fell and Pillar beyond

A close up of Harter Fell with the Scafell range behind.

Sunlight and shadows on Esk Pike and Bowfell

Leaving the summit on our way to Pikes (bottom right). Dow Crag and the Walna Scar road can be seen with Coniston Old man behind. To the right are White Pike and White Maiden.

A close up of the Scafells with Mickledore between.

Looking back to Caw from Pikes

From Pikes we made our way down in the direction of White Pike to pick up the bridleway down the Lickle valley

Looking down the Lickle valley. Our path was on the right hand side and would take us to Stephenson Ground.

Looking back up the valley to White Pike

Approaching Stephenson Ground.

From Stephenson Ground the bridleway runs up Long Mire.

However instead of taking the valley bottom bridleway we followed a track up towards Caw over Broadslack

A bit harder going than the lower bridleway but it did keep the views a little more

Eventually we dropped down from Broadslck to meet the bridleway at its summit

We are now rejoining the Park Head road to retrace our way back to the car. The clouds had thickened to the north by now and the views were more hazy.

Heading back towards Stickle Pike and the car.

Hesk Fell (r), ThE Pike (centre foreground) with Whitfell behind, and Buck Barrow to the left.

And finally ......back to the car. We were the only one there when we arrived.
