The weatherman had given a better forecast than that we awoke to but after days of inactivity we were both ready for a walk so decided to set off in the hope that the day would improve. It wasn't too bad, the showers we had were only light and not to long lasting but any sun we saw was in very small quantities. The views from Black Crag on a clear bright day are quite delicous but today wasn't one of those days. However a bit of cloud often adds atmosphere or so they say.

The start of the path up Tom Gill which is the outfall from Tarn Hows. After plenty of rain there was lots of water coming down.

Arriving at a broody Tarn Hows around 10am

Erosion control at Tarn Hows.....I'm not to sure about this method. Certainly some control is needed on the number of paths but we were just a bit concerned about dogs running across that chicken wire. Could give a nasty cut if a paw went through and was trapped.

Cloud topped Wetherlam across the Tarns

A glimpse of sunlight.....a rare commodity on this walk

It's easy to see why Tarn Hows is one of the Lake Districts most visited places. Easy access and splendid views make a good recipe.

We are at the north end of the Tarns now and will shortly leave to take the bridleway to Iron Keld.

A glimpse of the Langdale Pikes over Lingmoor as we make our way to Iron Keld.

The entrance to the Iron Keld plantation. Just after this picture we made our first change into the waterproof jackets as an heavier shower hit us. Fortunately there isn't much to see in the plantation which as recently been harvested.

By the time we left the plantation the rain had more or less cleared away. There is no path shown on the OS map to the summit of Black Crag but there is a well trodden path on the ground. The summit is shown straight ahead with what is known as the South East cairn on the far right.

A look southwards with the Tarns below and Conistonwater in the distance.

Lingmoor and the Langdales

A touch of brightness over the Wrynose Pass with Cold Pike and Pike O'Blisco to the right

The perfectly formed South East cairn with Windermere below

Nearly there!

Edith at Black Crag

My intention had been to drop down from the summit directly to Low Arnside seen below. However as everything was very slippy underfoot and some wet waist-high bracken (chin-high in Ediths case) to negotiate  we decided to return to the bridleway and take that route.

Holme Fell below, Wetherlam now almost clear of cloud and a still cloud topped Old Man as we make our way back down

Back on the bridleway now and on our way to Low Arnside.

The Fairfield and Helvellyn Fells under cloud

Low Arnside.

Low Arnside Cottage was used in "Miss Potter" film starring Renee Zellweger which was released in January 2006.

A look back to Black Crag

Holme Fell is overlooked by Wetherlam (r) and Coniston Old Man (l)

Having descended to the road at Oxen Fell we took this path which follows the road back towards Yew Tree Tarn. The path sves walking along a quite busy, narrow road although it was a little muddy in places.

Edith makes friend with some Belted Galloways as we walk towards Yew Tree Tarn. Shortly after this picture the heavier showers were back with us.

And finally.... A quickly taken picture of Yew Tree Tarn
