One thing that I have noticed over the last few months when because of my health problems our walking as been restricted to lower levels is that how much of the wonderful Lake District we have missed seeing. Previously it as always been a dash for the car park or parking spot and away upwards on to the higher ground. We are now able to wander around at leisure looking at places that previously we just drove by. Over the years we have been to Ennerdale a number of times but it was always straight to Bowness Knott or Bleach Green to leave the car and then onto the fells. Todays walk would take us past those places that were usually a blur. The walk started and finished at The Owl Barn at Hawes Farm which is down a lane on the right about halfway between Ennerdale Bridge and Kirkland.
Looking back down the lane from where we were staying. From here we just crossed the road to take a footpath to Stockhow Hall
In our haste to get out we had forgotten to bring the walking poles. Although we didn't really need them they would have been handy across the fields which after all the rain were very "squishy".
A look over towards Grike and Crag Fell
Approaching Stockhow Hall once owned by the Patrickson family known as "The Kings of Ennerdale"
Looking down Ennerdale with Pillar in the distance
Our route from Stockhow Hall then took us down to Ennerdale Bridge
The Shepherds Arms at Ennerdale Bridge.
From Ennerdale Bridge we followed the lane to Bleach Green passing these cottages near Broadmoor
Grike Cottage
Approaching Ennerdale Water
Crag Farm House with Ben Gill to mthe left.
The weir with Bowness Knott in the centre and Anglers Crag right
Anglers Crag with the pinnacles on Crag Fell just visible.
A cloud topped Great Borne
A memorial seat......
to the former occupants of the Anglers Arms which stood on the shore of Ennerdale Water until it was demolished in the the late 1960's
As we walked around the shoreside path towards Bowness Knott this smoother path of water offered a poor reflection.
A look across to Anglers Crag
The car park at Bowness Knott. From here we would be road walking to Croasdale. The road was very quiet just a couple of cars and a few bicycles passed along the way.
Looking back and up Rake Beck with the slopes of Great Borne on the left and the wooded Bowness Knott on the right. The knobble in the middle is Brown How.
Routen Farm
Whins
Walking through Croasdale
Just down the Ennerdale Bridge road from Croasdale we took this path which would lead us back to the cottage.
Hunter How comes into view ahead.
Looking back to Great Borne from Hunter How
Nearly back now and a look back over Bankend
And finally.....back to The Owl Barn to be welcomed by the small flock of Bantams which were waiting for Edith to feed them.
