Just a short but pleasant walk today on a quite pleasant day. All the paths and fellsides however were absolutely sodden after heavy overnight rain but the slopes were in the main gentle and caused no problems. This is a popular walk for the locals of Windermere and A.Wainwright in his "Outlying Fells of Lakeland" recommends starting the walk from there. In my opinion this route is a lot better as it misses Windermere out. Parking spaces however are very limited.
Passing Cleabarrow Tarn as we walk along the Dales Way
Golden Autumnal colours, moss and fern clad walls
A glimpse of the fells.
A "new" tarn seems to have formed here with all the heavy rain.
This lane carries in to Windermere and would be our return. We however turned off to the right on the Dales Way towards School Knott
The tarn is not named on the OS Map but Wainwright in his "Outlying Fells of Lakeland" refers to it as Schoolknott Tarn .....that's good enough for me! From here we did a bit of a circular route to take in the summit of Grandsire which can be seen behind the trees....it'll all become clearer on a later picture.
Looking N'wards over School Knott plantation.
A look back as we start the short climb up Grandsire. School Knott is in centre picture
As we gained height Windermere came into view along with the Langdale Fells
Grandsire summit.....looking towards Reston Scar and Brunt Knott
The view in a N'ly direction took in the Fairfield, Kirkstone and Kentmere fells.
Towards the Langdales
And the Coniston Fells
From the summit of Grandsire we headed S'ly to pick up the Dales Way which would return us to the tarn.
From the tarn we took the path up to School Knott. You can see our previous route from here. From the tarn we went through the gate in the far wall, then up Grandsire to follow the ridge back to the Dales Way and the tarn.
Looking across to Hugill Fell and Reston Scar with Brunt Knott behind.
The Coniston Fells above Claife Heights and Windermere from School Knott
The Langdale Fells across Windermere
Langdale close up
and again
From School Knott we descended on AW's route towards Windermere to join the lane above the housing estate.
On the lane back to the car
This is the point where we left the lane earlier in the walk ....it is just a case of following it back to the car now
Time for a minor trespass....I've walked past Cleabarrow Tarn scores of times but have never taken the time to visit it.
Wow!!......so glad that I did this time.
And finally ......back to the car.......I know!!!.....no cafe stop.....but Fell Foot park is only 15 minutes away.
