We awoke to a dull, grey morning but with the promise of brighter weather by lunchtime. When we set off from home for Cartmel this seemed to be the case as I had the sun visor down in the car approaching Grange. However we were to be ultimately disappointed as just after we set set off walking the cloud edge that had been moving northwards stopped then even receded to the south again. Nevertheless we had a short pleasant walk although at some point Edith must have twisted on a knee because the following morning it had swollen badly. Our initial path was part of the Cistercian Way which is a 33 mile waymarked walk from Grange over Sands to Roa Island near Barrow. An area rich in history, noted for its monastic connections, especially Furness Abbey.

Hampsfell is one of the fells listed in A Wainwrights "Outlying Fells of Lakeland" book. Aficionados of the great man will probably want to follow in his his footsteps and start this walk at Grange. Those wanting to avoid the first dreary mile of uphill road walking will take heed of this far superior route.

We left the car at the roadside in Cartmel where we had this view of the church.

For those who don't fancy leaving their cars on the narrow roads there is plenty of parking near the racecourse.

Off we go!

Across the rather sticky fields to Pit Farm.

Hampsfell.

Getting there.

Looking back over Pit Farm to Cartmel with How Barrow behind.

At the intake wall.

Nearly on the ridge and a look back to Cartmel

Arnside Knott comes into view as we gain the ridge

The brighter weather which should have been with us was moving away at this point

The Hospice comes into view ahead.

Humphrey Head another of Wainwrights Outlying Fells comes into view as we gain a little height.

The Kent estuary with Arnside Knott behind.

An hazy Whittbarrow

Edith was at the Hospice throwing sticks for some dogs there.

The Hospice....Within its walls are four panels. For pictures of these and for the views on a better day click HERE

FRom the summit we headed N'wards to the cross wall before taking a path down. Here we are looking back to the Hospice.

The path down

The dark green square in the field to the right of centre picture puzzle me. Field markings are usually a lighter colour.....any ideas?

Descending to Longlands

Approaching Longlands with its walled garden.

Longlands.

Passing Borwicks Aynsome on the way back to Cartmel

Back at Cartmel.

And finally....The Mallard....Tea & toasted crumpets.
