After yesterdays short walk along the canal at Borwick (Located in Local Pictures) I awoke expecting to have a lot of pain in the knees. However I was pleasantly surprised to find that apart from a bit of a niggle in the right knee they were ok, so I decided on this short walk along a section of the Lancaster Canal that we had not visited for many years. It is located around the Crooklands area about 4 miles south of Kendal and home to the Westmorland County Show.
After parking the car we made our way to the canal.
This section is part of the Northern Reaches and apart from the odd exception free of traffic.
Within a short while we had to leave the canal where it is culverted to pass under the M6
We only leave the canal to walk under the M6 on the A65
Having passed under the M6 we can rejoin the canal. Shown is the church aon St Gregory's Hill
Back to the canal now.
A spot of colour on the opposite bank
The farmer is gathering in the first cut of the season.
This chappie was doing an impression of Long John Silver waiting for the crew to arrive.
Crooklands Bridge
Looking over to Crooklands
This is the only vessel that sails along this length of the canal. It is owned by the Lancaster Canal Trust whose aim is to have the section of canal from Tewitfield to Kendal restored and reopened to navigation. The boat runs trips to raise money. More info about the trust can be found HERE it will open in a new page.
The Awww Factor!!......leave you to work it out. She had 3 cygnets on her back.
Oldhall Bridge
Just caught a glimpse of the Westmorland County Showground through a gap in the trees. It was still being cleaned up after an event last weekend.
Mattinson's Bridge. We left the canal at the other side of the bridge.
Looking up to where we left the canal
I was puzzled at first as we descended by a number of short walls and pens and even a bridge.
But when I unfurled this it all became clear.
Our way back was along this quiet lane. Here we are approaching Lane Farm
Natures pipecleaner.....a Bistort I think.
The lane passes through the hamlet of Milton.
Eventually the lane returns us to the canal.
Back on the canal and nearly back
Back to the car. There was a snack bar there but we ignored it
As we were calling in at the Deerslet Garden Centre and cafe near Burton-in-Kendal on the way back.
