Another glorious day on two of Wainwrights Outlying Fells of Lakeland. A bit too warm for me personally and it seemed to take its toll as I had to cut the walk short. Very enjoyable nevertheless and these small fells, particularly Cunswick Fell give superb views of the higher fells.
Having parked up the car we were on the southern end of Cunswick Fell in minutes.
Today instead of walking along the ridge we will take the path through the wall down into the valley
The old Lime Kiln at the side of the path
Walking down Gamblesmire Lane
Cunswick Hall is just visible now. At the bottom of this path we will turn right then through a kissing gate into the fields to walk by the farm.
A peek over the wall at Cunswick Hall
Having rejoined the farm lane just after the farm we took a path off to the right which followed the wall to these trees where we entered Ash Spring woods.
It is only a very short walk through the woods but the shade was most welcome
Leaving Ash Spring we walked over to Scar Wood with a glimpse of Cunswick Tarn.
On the path upwards through Scar Wood which would lead us out onto Cunswick Fell
Heading to the summit
Distant Coniston Fells as we head for the summit.
The views from the summit of Cunswick Fell particularly from West to East are superb and far reaching. Here the Coniston Fells.
Moving round to the Crinkles, Bowfell and the Langdales with Gable behind.
The Fairfield Fells and Red Screes
Reston Scar and Staveley in the foreground
My favourites....The Kentmere Fells
Potter Fell
The Whinfell Ridge
Last but by no means least ..The Howgills
Close up Langdales with Gable in background
Time to leave....walking along the ridge towards the car
Surprisingly the first people we saw as we looked back
Almost back at our starting point.
We are now making our way up on to Scout Scar
Passing the "Mushroom" as we walk south along the crest of the ridge
Distant Coniston Fells
The Langdales
There were thousands of these all over the ridge.....Mouse ear-Hawkweed we think!
A big close up.....spot Blackpool Tower?
Edith insisted on my appearance.....some may be thinking I'm sending her by herself!
This is somewhere near where I cut the route short. I had intended to descend to Barrowfield shown below and reascend further south but a lack of fitness and dodgy lungs told me that in this heat I was not up to it.
Looking across the Lythh valley to Whitbarrow and south to Arnside Knott
Making our way back along the scar edge.
Edith spotted this on the way back.......A Fragrant Orchid we are told.
Nearly back now
Just one more of my beloved Kentmere Fells
And finally back to the car.
