We have been up Nicky Nook a few times over the years and have always enjoyed the walk. However when "browsing" the net I came across this walk which had a return route that we had not done before. The route descriptions are given HERE. The longer route which takes in the summit of Nicky Nook is given as around 7.5 miles but when I plotted it on Memory Map I made it around 6.25 miles. On reflection the return route wasn't as good as what I had hoped it would be. The route we took on this walk was far better.

We left the car at the roadside entering Scorton and walked into the village passing the Methodist Church
A splendid display of plants and flowers at The Barn a plant centre and gift shop
The Priory, this is where we leave the village to follow the lane known as Snowhill Lane upwards.
The M6 looking N'wards.
The lane continues mostly upward until you reach a "T" Junction
Where right opposite you will be the path to Nicky Nook
Gaining a little height Wyresdale Lake come into view. The lake was created in 1897 for fishing and is fed by Tithe Barn Brook
A close up of Clougha Pike over Potters Hill farm which we would pass later.
Reflections in a small reservoir which you pass on the way.
A look back towards home. Unfortunately the Lakeland fells where not visible today.
The route is waymarked but the paths are well trodden and also wet!
The Tarn
Looking towards the fine cairn on the SW end of the Nicky Nook which overlooks the valley
Nicky Nook summit.
Looking over the valley of Grize Dale to Grizedale Lea reservoir
I decided to take the direct rout towards Fell End farm rather than go down the steeper path into Grize Dale
A tower and a post with a woolly hat. There are a few of these towers about, my guess is that they had something to do with the construction of the reservoirs but I have nothing to back this up.
Fell End farm ahead with Hayshaw Fell behind
A fine memorial seat as we reach the bridleway in Grize Dale
Passing by Fell End farm. The next part of the walk was on farm lanes until Point 5 on the route map.
Nicky Nook
Grizedale Fell
Having reached Point 5 on the route map it all went a bit pear-shaped. Not bothering to check my map we set off following boot marks slightly off course.
The route had been well walked (or others had made the same mistake) but I soon realised that we were wrong and retraced our track to pick up the correct path.
Before long we were approaching Potter's Hill farm where there was a welcoming committee
Passing Lea Green farm as we walked along the lanes towards the Scorton Picnic centre
Another crossing of the M6
Just over the M6 bridge is the Scorton Picnic site. Our way however lay on the t'ther side. But first a picture of the River Wyre from Clevely Bridge
This section was a bit of a disappointmrnt for me. On the OS map it looked as if our path followed the river bank for a while whereas in facr the river was on t'other side of a well overgrown banking.
Having now left the path in the previous picture to take our path back to Scorton we had a view of Nicky Nook again
Park Brook
Across Park Brook to Scorton Lake, sadly the best view we had of it.
Back to Scorton
And finally....to The Barn
Next Walk: 7th September 2009 - Lake District - A Great Langdale walkabout
