This is my opinion one of the central Lakes best low level walks spoilt only on having to pass through the shopping centre that is Grasmere with its attendant hordes. I can't blame them for visiting as I'm there myself but this chappie just wants to get through the place as quickly as possible. A different story on a quiet winter day maybe but on a busy summer Saturday it's not for me.
We left the car at the Pelter Bridge car park and walked up the lane past these delightful cottages.
Silver How across Rydal Water
We stayed on the top path which would lead us to what is known as Loughrigg Cave
After recent heavy rain the water was streaming off the fellsides
Loughrigg cave
High Pike & Low Pike with Red Screes behind from near the cave
Nab Scar from near the cave
The familar profile of Helm Crag from the Terrace path
Looking over Penny Rock woods to Silver How
The dip of Dunmail Raise over the woods
Looking up Grasmere from near the end of the terrace route.
Lonscale Fell peeps through the gap of Dunmail.
Seat Sandal, Stone Arthur, Great Rigg, Heron Pike and Nab Scar
Walking down through the woods to the shore of Grasmere
The path doubles back on itself here down to the waterside.
Much to breezy today for any chance of reflections
Helm Crag
Seat Sandal, Stone Arthur and the tip of Great Rigg.
Grasmere boathouse
Helm Crag with Faeryland below
Tea & Cake at Faeryland
A quick dash through Grasmere.....how did I get a people-free picture!
We took the old corpse road to Rydal passing Dove Cottage on the way
The "Coffin Stone"
White Moss Tarn....This was a surprise as the last time we passed by here the tarn was almost overgrown.
We've just renewed our membership of this worthy organisation. The membership fees are probably recouped in saved parking charges......The National Trust....for ever, for everyone
Dunney Beck which makes an interesting alternative route to Alcock Tarn
Wansfell Pike from the corpse road
Across Rydal Water to Loughrigg
Rydale Mount.
A walk into the grounds of Rydal Hall for a cuppa gave me the chance of these pictures of Rydal Beck
St Mary's Church at Rydal
Back to the car park where water is still running down the road.
Next Walk: 29th August 2009 - Forest of Bowland - Nicky Nook from Scorton
