The gentle little fell of School Knott offers the finest views of the town of Windermere backed by the majestic mountains of Langdale. I believe this route is probably the best way of approach. The by-way between Cleabarrow and Alice Howe is itself a pleasant walk. Following the by-way first to Old Droomer we then turned up the slopes of School Knott, at first through the community woods, then onto the open slopes. As we gained height the views behind just got better and better. After reaching the summit and yet more pictures we made our way down to the tarn, unamed on the maps but known as School Knott Tarn. It was then another short climb onto the summit of Grand Sire before picking up the Dales Way to Hag End and a visit to the farm cafe. From Hag End it was but a short walk along the single track lane back to the car.
There is space for 4/5 cars at the Cleabarrow end of the by-way.
The Cleabarrow pond at the start of the by-way
Gorgeous autumnal colours all around, and below.
Catching a glimpse of what will come later
No sign of this pool/pon/tarn on the map but it does seem to becoming a permanent feature
Around this point it is possible to take a path on the right to the School Knott tarn. We however will carry on a little further.
Red Screes in the distance
Old Droomer. Just past here you pass through a deer fence.
Through the Deer fence turn right on the rising path through the community woods
Taken from a clearing in the woods the views are now opening up over Windermere to the Langdales
and over Claife Heights to the Coniston Fells
Out of the woods now and onto the open fellside.
What can I say!
Wray Castle across Windermere
Bowfell with Scafell Pike behind
Huff & Puff, Huff & Puff....dammit I used to run up here!
Finally on the top and looking N'wards to Orrest Head and Banner Rigg
Luscious Langdales
Edith on the summit
Moi
Claife Heights with the Coniston Fells behind
Looking over Lingmoor, Rossett Pike and Allen Crags to Great and Green Gable with the Langdale Pikes to the right.
School Knott tarn.
Grand Sire summit
The Howgills from Grand Sire
Orrest Head
Looking over School Knott & Claife Heights to the Conistons
S'wards down Morecambe Bay
From Grand Sire we walked down to pick up the Dales Way
Which we followed to Hag End farm and the cafe.
Hag End
From Hag End we followed the lane down to Outrun Nook, shown here and back to the car.
A look back as we return down the lane to the car.
