A late start today due to watching Andy Murray in the Australian Open. After the first two sets I'm afraid I lost interest and we set off for Arnside & Silverdale. As we drove along the promenade it seemed that the area was under a dull grey cloud yet under it we could see the Lakeland Fells. A change of plan then took us to the Kendal Scars where no map or compass or GPS is needed. To get lost along these ridges would be the pinnacle of foolishness. Stray from the ridges....that is another matter.
We last visited Cunswick Fell only a week ago.....that day we were to be disappointed with no views.....Last Visit
From the car park looking south to Scout Scar which we would visit later. The sun is trying to get through a bank of cloud overhead.
Walking through the small copse to Cunswick Fell
Onto the open ridge the views are extensive but we are still under cloud.
Looking over Kendal Fell and Benson Knott to the Howgills
The Whinfell Ridge...A walk every fellwalker should do. It runs between the A6 and M6 with a return along the unspoilt Borrowdale valley.
Ahead the Kentmere Fells and the High Street are now in sunlight.
Before long we to were enjoying the sun and these views to the Conistons.
It is now blue skies and sun....just as it should be!
The magnificent Howgills over the northern end of Benson Knott.
The rather large summit cairn on Cunswick Fell with the Kentmere Fells behind. For those who like to a video of the view there is one below.
If not here are some pictures from the summit
The Coniston Fells....although not able to do these high tops it is fun, well to me anyway, trying to identify the homesteads in the valleys.
The head of Langdale Fells.
Red Screes with Fairfield behind.
I could look at these all day. These were fells on which I started my fellwalking. I used to love doing the Kentmere Horseshoe adding in Kidsty Pike (my personal favourite fell) for good measure.
The Whinfell Ridge.....don't forget to give it a try.
Humpy Howgills.
Benson Knott
A last look back as we leave Cunswick Fell to walk past the car to make the short ascent of Scout Scar on the other side of the road.
Taken from the ascent of Scout Scar
Close up of Kentmere with Cunswick Hall below us.
This was the only picture I took as we walked south along the scar as the sun was right in our face. Looking south to Arnside Knott.
A short walk took us to the Trig Point on Scout Scar with the Howgills behind.
And one with the boss-lady for the granddaughters.
Cool Conistons.
Luscious Langdales.
Bonny Bowfell
Scout Scar shelter
Red Screes with Great Rigg & Fairfield behind
Following the edge.
I know....you've seen it....but I love this view
A wintry High Street and Mardale Ill Bell
Next Walk: 3rd February 2010 - S.Cumbria - Haverbrack & Dallam Park
