I had arranged to meet up with a guy in Ambleside who wanted to talk about the possibility of producing a small booklet of short walks. Having already said I wasn't really interested he still asked if we could meet and I agreed. The meeting time being flexible we decided to set off early and do this short walk over the southern tip of Loughrigg from Clappersgate.

We left the car on the Clappersgate to Hawkshead road next to the River Brathay and walked back to Clappersgate.

The path starts near a phone kiosk and is a narrow uphill lane at first, widening out part way up.

Here we are just about to reach the gate in the intake wall that will lead us onto the fellside.

A delightful path zig-zags up the fellside

Gaining height Black Fell comes into view with Fishgarths Wood to our right.

Into the sun a view down Windermere.

The Coniston Fells now appear as we get a little higher.

Through the hole in the wall is the summit of Todd Crag. It looked to have a snowman on it but the camera hasn't picked it up.

Our path ahead

Wansfell Pike and Ambleside peek out around the southern tip of Loughrigg.

The Coniston Fells are now clear of the trees

Looking over Woundale Raise (Kirkstone Pass Rd) to Ill Bell and Froswick

Red Screes with the Scandale Pass and Little Hart Crag to its left

A small, frozen unnamed tarn complete with cairn as he towards Lily Tarn

The always delightful Lily Tarn, but it's not exactly picnic weather today.

Wansfell ahead with St Ravens Edge to the left

One of Lakelands classics....The Fairfield Horseshoe

Time to get a wiggle on!

Normally when walking over here we keep to the western side to meet up with the Ambleside - Little Loughrigg bridleway.

Today however we stayed for the first time to the other side. Ill Bell & Froswick

Red Screes on the right ....the eastern leg of the Fairfield Horseshoe to the left

A look back as we follow the wall down...

to where it will meet up with ....

..the bridleway coming up from Ambleside.

The horseshoe dominates the views from here on down

A glimpse of the Wansfell ridge

The track now metalled goes down past Miller Brow to the road...

and over Miller Bridge into Ambleside.

The glorious spire of the Ambleside Parish Church of St Mary the Virgin

Rothay Bridge from the Ramblers Bridge

A short walk along the road took us back to Clappersgate and to the car.

Next Walk:     20th February 2010 - Arnside & Silverdale - Arnside Knott from Arnside

Last Walk:    18th February 2010 - Lake District - A circuit of Grasmere from White Moss
