It's Saturday again and therefore as most readers will know it's usually a localish walk as Edith visits her brother later in the day. We had decided on Whitbarrow the previous evening but this time with a return route on the eastern side through the woods back to Rawsons.
Having parked the car we set off for Raven's Lodge which is hidden behind the hedging.
Raven's Lodge. We just followed the lane behind the farm where there is parking for a few cars and took the path into the old quarry workings.
Walking up past the old quarry.
There are many birds nesting on the old quarry face.
Eventually the path narrows and you reach a stile (r)
Passing through the stile in a few yards you will see the old seat on your right. Just here a path goes off to the right upwards. Just follow this and after passing through a wall and then back again through it you will eventually be deposited on the open top.
Arnside Knott across the River Kent.
By the time we got on the ridge the sun had disappeared and the clouds were filling in.
Over to the Howgills it looked a little brighter.
Our route was along the ridge with the Eastern & Far Eastern Fells ahead.
Part way along the ridge is a cross-wall with a wall stile. After crossing this you are entering the Nature reserve.
Some locals along the way.
Looking over some limestone pavement down to Witherslack Hall
These small scars are a feauture of Whitbarrow
The sun reappears as we make our way up the last small climd. Sadly it didn't last long.
The summit cairn comes into view
It was quite breezy so we didn't hang around too long.
The summit views were nothing fantastic today but at least we are out & about.
The Fairfield Horseshoe and Red Screes in close-up.
Far Eastern fells
From the summit we made our way down to a wall stile into the forest.
There's not a lot to see on the way back through the forest but the walking is easy.
Eventuall we emerged from the forest at Rawsons
From Rawsons a track takes us back to Raven's Lodge passing the daffodil filled Rawson's Wood
And finally .....someone as set up a shop near the old quarry at Raven's Lodge.
