Ediths' company today was on the condition that we were back home mid afternoon so that she could get in her garden. When I suggested this walk it was well recieved as Askham is one of her favourite villages. Another quite warm day meant views were a bit hazy.

We left the car in the free car park and walk up the road towards the fellside.

There is some parking spaces here at the fell gate but I prefer to park in the village.

A look back with just the tops of the Nort Pennines showing.

The fell ponies were not interested in us at all.

It's quite warm already, fleeces stay in the bags today.

A southerly look towards Knipescar

Looking across Askham Fell to the fells of the northern High Street.

As we got higher and further west the views over Ullswater started to open.

Looking over Hallin Fell and Place Fell to the Helvellyn ridge.

Towards Gowbarrow and the Dodds.

Little and Great Mell Fells with Blencathra in the distance.

Heughscar Hill summit cairn with the North Pennines behind.

"Heughscar Hill is the gentlest of eminences. It is easily reached by a stroll from Westmorland's most attractive village, Askham and commands a fine prospect, including a lovely view of Ullswater with the lofty Helvellyn range forming a majestic backgound"......A Wainwright....The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.

It's a pity that is so hazy.

We walked N'wards to Heugh Scar where we dropped done onto a path which would take us to The Cockpit.

The clouds spill over the Fairfield ridge.

Blencathra

A look back to Heugh Scar.

The rolls of bracken are still here. Maybe a drop in demand for the products?

Descending to The Cockpit seen in centre picture.

"Ancient and modern".....well even I can be classed as modern in comparison to a Bronze Age stone circle.

From the Cockpit we took a rather wet track to Ketley Gate back towards Askham.

A look back as we start to climb.

Horseriders above us as we have our butties.

All downhill now.

The ponies had moved down to the fell gate now.

A lovely display.

One of the local watering holes.

Our choice.
