After a visit to the doctors for my 4 weekly blood test we made our way to Low Tilberthwaite arriving around 10:20. Our route took us through High Tilberthwaite farm on the rising old quarry road past Knotts and down into Little Langdale to visit Slater Bridge. From there we made our way to Hodge Close from where we walked up to Ivy Crag on Holme Fell. Our descent took us down past the reservoirs to join the Hodge Close - Holme Ground bridleway and a return to the car.
We left the car at Low Tilberthwaite and set off for High Tilberthwaite.
A very dry Yewdale Beck
Cottages at Low Tilberthwaite
High Tilberthwaite. From here we took the old quarry track over to Little Langdale
A look back
The path is easy to walk along.
As we gain height the Fairfield Fells come into view
Looking towards Grisedale Hause with Seat Sandal on the left and Fairfield to the right
Looking along one of the paths that lead to the old quarries that litter these fellsides
Starting to descend into Little Langdale with Lingmoor ahead.
The Langdale Pikes peek through the gap at Blea Tarn.
Blake Rigg and Pike O'Blisco
As we dropped down to the valley bottom we took the path towards Slater Bridge
High Hall Garth
Slater Bridge
Looking up Little Langdale towards Wrynose
We set off back towards High Tilberthwaite along another quarry track before leaving it to cross over to Hodge Close
Approaching Hodge Close
Wetherlam from Hodge Close
Looking over old quarry workings to the Langdales.
Faraway Fairfield
Hodge Close quarry
Rather than walk back along the road from Hodge Close to Holme Ground we decided to take the bridleway. As we walked along it I fancied trying to see how my breathing would be if we went up Holme Fell so having convinced Edith I would take plenty of stops we left the bridleway to take the path towards the summit.
As we gained a little height the views started to open, here to the Helvellyn and Fairfield Fells.
And to the Langdales
Higher still with the old reservoir below us.
Almost there.
We are now on Ivy Crag which is not the main summit which lies a couple of hundred yards to the west and is slightly higher.
The main summit with Wetherlam behind.
Looking to Red Screes and the Kentmere Fells
Helvellyn and Fairfield Fells.
The Langdales from the main summit with our outward path visible below
Looking to Coniston Water into the sun
One of the now disused reservoirs.
We are now back on the bridleway to Holme Ground. We heard our first cuckoo of 2010 in the woods near here.
Just as docile as the ones we see at Arnside Knott
A look back at Holme Ground where we left the bridleway. A short walk from here took us across to High Tilberthwaite.
Crossing the fields we also saw our first Herdwick lamb of 2010
Back near the car I decided to take a look at this old sheepfold.
Known as the Tilberthwaite Touchstone Fold it is one of those worked on by Andy Goldsworthy.
