It's a Bank Holiday weekend and there is F1 racing and live football on the box.....what to do?   It was a lovely morning, much too nice to nice to miss so it was a quick dash up the A6 and then up the Lyth Valley for this delightful walk. Whitbarrow is usually walked from its south end primarily because a certain Alfred Wainwright wrote so in his Outlying Fells of Lakeland Book. His route from Mill Side is indeed a lovely walk but it does the soul good to find other ways to the top. There are a number of routes from the Lyth Valley all delightful walking.

We left the car in a lay-by on the A5074 opposite the Lyth Valley Hotel.

Right next to the car was the start of the narrow lane that we walked up. Later the few couple of hundreds yard of this lane would be our return. For now keep straight on and ignore a turn off on the left.

Eventually you reach this cottage from where a right turn is taken up a lane for a short distance.

Having reached the fingerpost (l) on the left hand side of the lane go through the stile and follow the track (r) through the trees. The OS map shows the right of way following the wall further to the left...ignore it.

Eventually you reach a wall with gate which after going through leaves you on the open fell. Continue following the path you are on.

A look back to the gate and across the Lyth Valley to Scout Scar.

A wee bit higher and looking over Cunswick Fell towards the Whinfell Ridge.

All the time the path is climbing albeit gently and opening views northwards to the Fairfield Horseshoe, Red Screes and Kirkstone.

The path rises slowly but steadily, at the same time turning slowly to head southwards. Other paths will join it from the left and a couple will cross but ignore these.

As you approach the cross wall across the felltop the path splits. Either can be taken but if it is your first time it is probably better taking the on to the left.

Having crossed the wall there is a short section through the trees.

After clearing the trees the path rises again towards the summit with views behind you to Ingleborough.

A short climb and before you know it your there.....Lords's Seat Whitbarrow.

It's always worth carrying on southwards a few hundred yards for views down Morecambe Bay and here to Arnside Knott.

Far Eastern magic.

Whinfell Ridge over the Kendal Scars.

We walked back down our ascent route a short while to find a stile in the wall that runs North - South along the fell.

Having crossed the wall we took a forestry path, ignoring the RoW down and then left to the Township Plantation and then to The Row.

Having left the woods our path continued above The Row shown below....

....before descending to the hamlet.

A fine old limestone kiln on the way down.

A look back as we enter The Row

And finally.....having picked up a lane at The Row (l) we followed this to where it met our original starting path (r) and back to the car.
