Another shortish walk in the south of Cumbria taking in the Nature Reserve at Latterbarrow followed by a walk to the summit of Yewbarrow which should not be confused with its cousin of the same name in the Western Fells. This was followed by what I believe is the only "self-service" cafe in the Lake District before returning to the car.

Looking over to Whitbarrow from where we left the car near the entrance to the Latterbarrow Nature Reserve.

The Nature Reserve is a lovely spot but this year it looks so dry.

We took the path through the reserve....

...and then through the woods...

....before crossing a couple of fields with views of Newton Fell to the delightfull...

....High Fell End. I could quite happily live here....it's only the money that's stopping me.

The short walk up through High Fell End meets with a minor road at which we turned left and followed for a short distance until....

....reaching the footpath on the right hand side of the road (l). This path will take us eventually to Yewbarrow....

It is a delightful path, almost a mile in length and gently rising through the sun dappled woods. It culminates at a gate (r) onto the open fellside.

The right of way goes off to the right here and we will rejoin it shortly. We will walk over to the trees and pick up a narrow path which will lead us to the summit of YewBarrow.

Walking to the summit of this Yewbarrow is a world apart from it's western cousin.

As we reach the ridge the weather seems to be following its pattern of recent walks , starting fine & sunny but clouds bubbling up and still so very hazy. Here we can see the southern end of Whitbarrow and across the River Kent to Farleton Fell and a distant Ingleborough.

Looking N'wards to the Far Eastern fells.

Whitbarrow and Chapel Head Scar.

Looking over Cartmell Fell the summit of Gummer's How is just in view.

It's a pity about the haze, it really is a splendid little viewpoint.

Fairfield Horseshoe

If you cannot find a path down just head towards Whitbarrow and eventually you will pick up the RoW.

We saw a few Orchids on the way down to the bridleway which we followed N'wards.

The bridleway continues past Lawns House.

A short way past Lawns House there is a "T" junction of paths. Turn right towards Witherslack Hall here.

Near the entrance to Witherslack Hall there is a RoW leading to a path up Whitbarrow. We took this path as far as the woods and then followed a forest path towards Beck Head.

It should be noted that this path is not a RoW but we have never had any problems walking here.

The path from the woods emerges onto a RoW  to Beck Head.

I believe that this is the only "self-service" cafe in the Lake District. I have been told of others in other areas of the UK. I think it is a wonderful idea. Just pop your money into an envelope and post it at the cottage down the lane.

This cottage is the "check-out" desk for the Hikers Rest. Incidentally it was once the home of one of Edith's Uncles and later one of her cousins.

Yew Tree Cottage.

Beck Head at Beck Head.

From Beck Head we had a short section of road walking to Witherslack and its Community Hall shown here, from where it was a short walk past the...

Derby Arms, which looks in need of a lick of paint and back to the car.

Next Walk:    2nd June 2010 - South Cumbria - Two walks and a meeting

Last Walk:    30th May 2010 - Lake District - Whitbarrow from the Lyth Valley
