It was Fathers Day today and I was under instructions to be home by early afternoon. We were therefore away in good time and after stopping off at Brown Howe we parked up just off the A5084 at Torver Back Common. Our route was along the Cumbria Way as far as Coniston Hall. From there we retraced our steps back to the Torver Jetty where we took the Brackenbarrow path through Torver Common Wood for a while before leaving it walk over Torver Back Common visiting Long Moss and then the lovely Kelly Hall Tarn.

For some reason I don't seem able to drive past the car park at Brown Howe.....I think it's a combination of the views and the WC there.

Coniston Water like other stretches of water is very low.

We are now parked up and looking over to Anne Riggs. From here we will take the track of the Cumbria Way towards Coniston.

Dow Crag and Coniston Old Man as we start our walk.

Torver Jetty....I think this was damaged when we last passed by.

The path is a delight as it rises and falls whilst following the edge of the lake.

When we walked this last the water level was high, right up to the banking.

The signpost to Brackenbottom. We will return here later.

Compare this picture with the one below which was taken on the 8th November 2009

I think you'll agree there's a bit of a difference.

Hoathwaite

Coniston Old Man.....the highest point in old Lancashire.

The footbridge at Hoathwaite Beck is redundant at the moment.

Coniston Hall campsite

Coniston Hall

Coniston Cuckoo?

After getting an icecream and a cold drink it was time to wander back.

Having returned to the signpost shown earlier we took the Brackenbottom path before diverting onto the open access land of Torver Back Common.

Away from the watersedge the views open a little.

It is a delightful little place and not many folk around.

Approaching the foot of what is known as Long Moss. Normally, as its name implies a very wet area, today it is easy walking.

The Water Lilies are starting to flower

After crossing the outlet of Long Moss we headed SW'ly above it back towards the car.

Well worth a visit.

Nearly back. That's the Landrover garage at Torver you can see ahead but Torver Back Common as one more gem before you reach it.

Kelly Hall Tarn

Kelly Hall Tarn derives its name from a nearby building that has since been demolished. The tarn It is but a short walk from the Water Yeat to Torver road and may be reached by following the footpath from the car park opposite the Landrover garage onto Torver Common. A perfect place for a picnic.

And finally.....it was just a short walk down the road to the car.
