The school holidays are now upon us and we have been promising to take a the two eldest granddaughters for a few walks during the break. We had been hoping to take them yesterday but the weather was against us. However the forecast for today promised a fine afternoon so we picked them up shortly after midday and took them first to our place for a bite to eat before making the short drive to Sunderland Point for this walk.

A little history.

Sunderland Point is unique in Lancashire, as twice daily the tide cuts off access to its two terraces of housing.

Once a community of farmers and fishermen, it enjoyed a period of prosperity as an 'out port' for Lancaster. Also a cotton port for Lancaster in the 18th century, there is still evidence of Sunderland Point's former days, including the infamous 'Cotton Tree' and Sambo's Grave, the grave of an African slave who died there in 1736 - a poignant reminder of the slave trade and the area’s maritime and trade history. Many of the private houses are Grade II Listed buildings, several of which once stored rum, tobacco and cotton. Sunderland Point also featured in the TV drama ‘The Ruby in the Smoke’ which starred Billie Piper and Julie Walters in 2006!!

Sunderland Point has an interesting circular walk affording splendid views over the estuary of the River Lune. Access by car but times of tides should be checked and notice taken of tide warnings at either end of road.

Route Map

We arrived just as the tide was leaving.

Hey!!......wait for me!!

Looking across the river to Glasson Dock with a cloud topped Clougha Pike behind.

From l to r.....Edith hereafter referred to as Nan, Nicole, Renee and Sophie.

We walked along First Terrace.

Ain't she a little cutie.....A week later she was flying to Lithuania with her Mum to visit her other Grandparents for a month.

Looking along the walkway and road (beach) to Second Terrace. However we would turn right here.....

....along The Lane which leads to the shore at the other side.

There's a bit of an hold up as Nicole makes a point.

This is more like Sophie.....always as to be at the front!

Crazy child!!

We are now at the West Shore which is mainly salt marsh and muddy gullies.

Not far away is Sambo's Grave which regular readers will know all about. Sophie was more interested in the livestock which were very friendly.

Renee and Nicole were supposedly helping Nan with the stones on sticks that we had tied up last time we came. Some however are getting past this stage and will be arranged on the grass when they can no longer stand.

I think it was too boring for Nicole so she as left her Nan and sister to join her cousin.

The afternoon was improving so we decided to carry on around the point. Progress was slow as Nicole had to climb on every piece of driftwood there was.

Looking towards the point with the Fylde coast to the right.

Looks like a time-out.

Looking across the point to the Old Hall which we would pass on our return.

Here we are starting to round the point.

They drive me crazy at times but I love them to bits.

As we walk around the point the terrain becomes a bit rougher.

The eroded fields of the point which I had to restrain Sophie from climbing as the top pieces are very loose,

We are back on the river side of the point now with the Old Hall ahead. The way ahead is very stony for a while now.

Not sure what was happening here. I think Renee was drawing something for Nicole with a piece of sandstone. Sophie as usual is in the distance.

The Old Hall and the walking is easier now.

Getting them to do anything in unison is virtually impossible...

.....unless it's something like this.

Taking on fluid.....it's warm work this walking.

Walking along Second Terrace. I wonder who that is ahead?

Along the road to First Terrace.

Back to the car. Just a carry for the last few yards and that was because Nan wanted to!!

Next Walk:      28th July 2010 - Arnside & Silverdale - Trowbarrow and the Pepper Pot

Last Walk:     25th July 2010 - Yorkshire Dales - A Stainforth saunter.
