Yet again a very wet and windy morning gave way to a brighter afternoon. Around noon it was quite bright and sunny at home and a quick check of the Windermere Car Ferry webcam indicated that it was the same there. I was by myself, Edith having changed the day for visiting her brother, so my bag and boots were quickly thrown into the car and just after 1pm I was parked up at Cleabarrow for this short walk. Now some may say that a round trip of 64miles for such a short walk may be excessive but my reward was in the views of which the camera can only go part of the way to capture.

Route Map

There is a new fingerpost at the start of the Cleabarrow - Heathwaite track. The lane tarmac at first soon gives way to a rough track

Within a short distance you are out in the open with a view of the Coniston fells over Claife Heights.

The "new" tarn that appeared to be drying out on the last visit as now been topped up with the summer rain.

At a broken fingerpost take the track to the right climbing gently.

A look back to cloudy fells

Through the gate the path carries on ahead. Ignore the track of the Dales Way which leads off to the right near the two trees.

Within a few minutes School Knott Tarn will appear. If your lucky there will be no breeze and you will get some reflections.

Today all I get is the blue sky mirrored in a calmer part of the tarn.

Looking across the tarn towards Grandsire as I make my way to School Knott.

Even gentle slopes like this make me gasp for breath hence.....another picture.

Across Windermere and Claife Heights to the Conistons from School Knott.

Despite the cloud it's not too bad a view for a short climb.

Close up Langdales.

Crinkle Crags and Bowfell over Pike O'Blisco.

The Fairfield fells and Red Screes peek over the top of Wansfell.

From School Knott I made my way back down to pass by the end of the tarn on my way to Grandsire.

Grandsire summit and a view of distant Howgills.

To Kentmere fells.

Over Wansfell to Fairfield and Red Screes.

Reston Scar in centre picture with Brunt Knott and Potter Fell behind.

Cloudy Conistons.

Humpy Howgills.

Here I am making my way back to the tarn with School Knott to the left and Lakeland behind.

At this old ruin look for the path leading down to the tarn.

School Knott Tarn.

It is simply a case of retracing the outward leg now unless of course you have more time available than I had when there are other options.

There are a few anglers at Cleabarrow Tarn. Wisely they have their shelters/tents up in case of more rain.

Next Walk:      25th August 2010 - Lake District - Easedale Tarn and Far Easedale

Last Walk:     22nd August 2010 - The Howgills - Winder from Sedbergh
