This was supposed to be a walk-free day. We had agreed the previous evening that Edith would get the shopping done and then spend some time in the garden whilst I would catch up with the backlog of walks on the PC. While Edith was at the shops I started to have second thoughts, it was a glorious day and it seemed a shame to waste. When Edith arrived home I was just about to mention my intentions as I helped her carry the shopping in when to my surprise she said "I've bought two packets of sandwiches so if you want we can go a walk". We couldn't go too far as our Daughter-in-law and youngest granddaughter were due home in the late afternoon after a month in Lithuania.

Route Map

It was very busy when we arrived at Arnside. We had to park on the beach car park which is just to the right of us.

The tide was on its way in as set off along the shore.

I had checked the tide table before we set off and knew that we would be able to walk to New Barns with no problems.

On the bigger tides the water will cut the path off here but today there are no problems.

Looking across to New Barns which we will not visit today.

We walked up the single track lane from New Barns a short way before taking the path into Copridding Wood.

The path ascends through the woods until a clearing is reached.

There were a number of people picking blackberries here including the group below. I'm not sure if the dolls prams were for their dolls or the blackberries.

A short distance further and we made a short steepish climb towards the viewpoint with views down the bay.

We are at the viewpoint now and although views to Lakeland are extensive they are not clear.

The Eastern and Far Eastern Fells from the viewpoint.

The Whinfell Ridge which runs between the A6 and M6

Making our way towards the summit.

A climbing frame?.....Or just wanting to add that final foot or two to the height.

Whitbarrow and Eastern fells.

The Howgills over the old quarry at Sandside.

A wider view from the top of Red Hills

Regular readers may remember this little chappie. When I was trying to get a picture of it in late May it came at me and butted me. Today it tried again but those horns are growing and I quickly moved aside.

This was it in late May.....those horns have certainly grown!......It has now been named "Nicky" after a certain Manchester United and Newcastle United player.

Mrs Doolittle however had no problems with it.

From Red Hills we walked down to Arnside and took the lane next to the YHA shown here, down to......

The Beach Walk Cafe......best value in town!!!

Suitably refreshed we made our way back into the village. The tide is ebbing now.

And finally......back to the car.

Next Walk:    30th August 2010 - Lake District - Lower Kentmere with an old friend.

Last Walk:     25th August 2010 - Lake District - Easedale Tarn & Far Easedale from Grasmere
