With the promise of a good weeks weather I didn't want to overdo my knee plus it was also Bank Holiday Monday and a desire to avoid the crowds. I must admit that normally I choose the walks we do knowing how I feel at the time but today Edith was given this honour. I should have known what her choice would be, she'd been going on about Jess for a week or two and I'd managed to put it off as it isn't that long since we were there. However with almost clear blue skies it is a lovely spot for views of my favourite valley so by 8am we were on our way.
Reston Scar from where we left the car.
We took the road towards Kentmere.
The weir at Barley Bridge.
This is where we are heading. In AW's Outlying Fells of Lakeland book in the section for Hugill Fell it is marked simply as "bungalow" (Hillside)
At the start of the lane up to the bungalow (l) and before long here is who is looking for. (r)
While Edith calls at the bungalow to check that's it OK for us to take Jess I continue onto the fellside.
The owner was working on a pool in the back garden so I waited here.
Jess meanwhile as already decided that she's coming with us and is waiting higher up the path.
She's as happy as Larry, never still for a moment.
A look back across Lower Kentmere.
Once the corner of the wall is reached the hard bit is over.....someone's playing hide & seek!
The summit cairn comes into view.
We've only been going a few minutes and already the treats are out.
The Coniston Fells
The Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and Langdales plus many more.
Looking up Kentmere with the Kentmere Horseshoe.
As we made our way off the AW summit of Hugill Fell I noticed a figure coming towards us that I recognised from his pictures. This is Don, a member of a forum that I occasionally post on.
Upper Kentmere from the northern cairn
From the AW summit we then made our way over to the highest point where Edith had a a little difficulty composing herself for a group shot.
That's better!!
Red Screes peeks through the gap between Sour Howes and Sallows
Eventually we arrived at Reston Scar where Jess once again ate my pie along with whatever Edith had brought for her.
The Conistons from Reston Scar.
Head of Langdale fells from Reston Scar.
Looking back to the highest point of Hugill Fell which wasn't available to AW when he wrote the Outlying Fells.
All the huffing and puffing is worth it just to see her like this.....Edith doesn't look too bad either ;-)
We decided to retrace our steps again rather than descend to Staveley for a road walk back. This gave Jess more time to charge about. She is on the lead at this point however as there are cows on the the other side of the wall.
Back to the highest point and I'm not sure what is going on here.....surely she doesn't want another treat!!
Close up Bowfell and the Langdales.
Back on the AW summit and Kentmere looks magnificent.
Jess had decided to have a charge about in the wet section and was looking a bit worse for wear at this point.
Making our way back down.
Nearly back Jess, but at no pint did she set off for home even though we could see her owner in the garden.
Another mucky goodbye.
Jess crashed out on the lawn whilst Edith had a chat with the owner.
Craggy Plantation as we make our way to Staveley.
The weir at Barley Bridge which is giving some concern to locals who fear that with any new flooding it could collapse.
Looking towards Brunt Knott as we walk back to the car.
