Regular readers will know that Edith as other commitments on a Saturday, namely visiting her brother in the late afternoon. This means that I either go myself, we do a local short walk or we don't bother. It was a fine, sunny although cold ( -4.0°C) morning so I asked Edith what she wanted to do and she would come along as long as we were back early. My plans were either Farleton Knott or Orrest Head with a final decision to be made after a look across the bay. Either of these two small hills would have us back home around 1pm so Edith decided to come along. As we drove along the promenade we settled on Orrest Head as although the views were good there was a slight haze and we thought Orrest Head would give better pictures.

Route Map

A glimpse of views to come as we walked the short distance along the road.

Into the sun, a view of our destination.

This is where we left the road to take the path to Near Orrest Farm.

A look back to Wansfell....

....and to Sour Howes

The ground is hard and frosted in places as we make our way ahead with the occasional look back

Bowfell and the Langdale Pikes show over the wall.

A wider view, from the Conistons to the Langdale Pikes.

These two looked a bit sorry looking in a field near Near Orrest Farm.

Having emerged onto a quiet lane near Near Orrest Farm we turned right along the road towards The Causeway Farm.

Just before reaching The Causeway Farm we took the path up to Orrest Head.

The Causeway Farm

Gaining height albeit slowly the views begin to open.

The cold air is starting to affect my breathing but plenty of stops help.

Almost there.

A little bit of heaven.

There's just a bit of an haze but with these views, who cares.

A look towards Threshthwaite Mouth and the Far Eastern fells.

A lovely viewpoint and a place to linger....

....but unfortunately not for the Browns' today.

We will follow our route back a while before heading off to the right towards The Common Farm in centre picture.

There are a couple of wall stiles to get over.

The Pikes look like slumbering volcanoes here.

Approaching The Common Farm.

Looking back over the farm to Orrest Head.

The Crinkle Crags, Bowfell and the still volcanic looking Langdale Pikes.

Wansfell and Red Screes

We have yet to see any vehicles along this road.

And finally....back at the parking spot which as filled up a wee bit since we left.
