A very poor day weather-wise. The morning started wet and very dull but was supposed to brighten. We picked this walk in the hope that we would see some swans and cygnets along the way and also it wasn't far to travel.

Route Map

It didn't look too promising as we left the picnic site. There were a number of showers close by but hopefully they will miss us.

The Stork Hotel at Conder Green.

It looks a bit brighter towards the Bowland hills. Hopefully we will get some sun later.

More showers, but so far we are dry.

We accessed the Glasson branch of the Lancaster Canal near The Mill Inn.

Looking towards Glasson. There is quite a good breeze.

We turned are backs on Glasson to follow the canal eastwards.

A big zoom brought this chappie into view on t'other side of the canal.

After a short walk we crossed the canal to make our way to Upper Thurnham.

We crossed the field to follow the far edge of Back Wood to .....

....Ss Thomas & Elizabeth RC Church

From the church we followed the lane past Thurnham Hall towards the road.

A short dash across the road to Moss Lane which would take us to Cockersands Abbey.

It is still quite dull but there are plenty of other options of cutting the walk short if we get caught in any rain.

A look over to Clougha Pike.

Dr Doolittle up to her usual tricks.

Eventually we reached the farm near the Abbey which appears to only to be used as a storage facility.

Some of the remains of the Abbey with Bowland Hills as a gloomy backdrop.

The Chapter House is a Grade 1 Listed Building.....MORE INFO ON ABBEY

It must have been a bit of a wild spot on windy winter nights. This is the view in the opposite direction across Cockerham Sands to the Fylde Coast.

We left the Abbey to follow the Lancashire Coastal Way to Glasson. The weather is also brightening at this point.

Looking over the Plover Scar Lighthouse to the Furness Peninsula and Black Combe.

Across the River Lune to the Heysham Power Stations with the Coniston Fells in silhouette behind.

Looking up the River Lune.

A glance back as we approach Abbey Lighthouse Cottage.

Abbey Lighthouse Cottage.....more likely to have been a beacon than actual lighthouse.

Looking across the River Lune to Sunderland Point and Lakeland.

Our way ahead to Crook Farm.

It was getting quite warm now so we found a convenient rock near the farm for a rest.

It was so peaceful here with just the birds for company. Can you spot Blackpool Tower?....It's not the Lighthouse!!

Crook Farm......Blackpool Tower was about 1/2" to the left of the red bouy.

Our path now crossed the fields towards Old Glasson with Clougha Pike in the distance.

Crossing Jenson Pool into which many of the field dykes drain.

The Caravan Park at Old Glasson.

Sunderland Point from Tithe Barn Hill as we enter Glasson to have something to eat at the cafe.

Glasson Dock (Salt water)....this is connected to both the River Lune and the Lancaster Canal through locks.

The lock gates into the river are only open for about an hour around high water.

Glasson Marina

And at last we see some swans but unfortunately no cygnets.

We walked along the canal a short way....

....to take a path through the grounds of Christ Church, Glasson.

All that was left now was the short walk back to the picnic site.

And my!!.....how the day as changed.
