It was a much better day today weather-wise but unfortunately we had other things planned for mid-afternoon. However, not wanting to waste such a nice morning we decided to nip up towards Newby Bridge and do either Gummer's How or Cartmel Fell depending on the views. When we arrived at the Gummer's How car park it was an easy decision to make.
Gummer's How looking quite splendid in the morning sun.
“The time comes to every Lakeland Fellwalker, in due course, when he has good reason to give thanks to Gummer’s How for salvaging his pride. Here is a fellwalk in miniature, a little beauty, with heather, a few rocks to scramble on, soft couches for repose, a classic view and a rustic Ordnance column --- just like the real thing; and all so easy of access from a motor road and attainable almost without effort.” .....A Wainwright in The Outlying Fells of Lakeland.
The Coniston Fells over Windermere.
Looking down on Lakeside with Summer House Knott behind.
And we are on our way!
The Gummer's How hot tub!
Not exactly a stairway to heaven with my breathing problems but if you wanna see the views you've got it to do.
At the top of the constructed path things get better. There's still some climbing to be done but it's along more natural routes. A slight concern here though.....Somebody in their wisdom as put in place a series of waymarkers which tend to lead those not familiar with the area to the right and to the summit missing out the fun of this small climb.
Lakeside below us as we start the short climb.
Edith's in a rush this morning.
I've got the camera so that's my excuse for stopping.
The heather on the way up is well into flower.
Perfick.....just perfick!!
" Are you coming or what?"......she's a hard taskmaster ;-)
Looks like we have company. That'll slow Dr Doolittle down as she'll want a chat!!
Apparently they are Hardy Luing Cattle and the breed evolved on the island of Luing off the west coast of Scotland. They are a cross between Highland Cattle and Shorthorns and are here to help manage the vegetation. They seemed rather placid as we walked by even Edith's gentle approach made them back off even Mr Bull who was also there with a ring through his nose. Personally I rather like the idea of them being up here, I can understand dog owners being a little apprehensive, just keep your eyes open for them.
Gummer's How summit.
A big zoom for Black Combe.
Coniston Fells
A view over Windermere after we walked over to the western edge.
Along Windermere to Eastern and Far Eastern Fells.
We made our way down to the east as I wanted to visit the reservoir in the plantation. However the place was in such a mess after harvesting that we gave it a miss...
...and instead followed the path round to rejoin our outward path near the hot tub.
As per usual, a visit to Gummer's How is followed by a visit to the NT Fell Foot Park.
This is such a lovely spot for adults and children, well worth a visit if nearby.
After a short walk around we visited the cafe....
.....and finally, a closing view of Gummer's How.
