I was by myself for this walk. Edith had done the weekly shop but wanted some time to catch up with the garden. I arrived at Arnside around midday to find the tide in but ebbing and decided on my usual route down to New Barns before an ascent of the Knott with a return down Red Hills.

Route Map

Having left the car on the promenade I made my way past the pier to gain access to the shore. There was a cooling breeze blowing up the estuary....perfect!

A look back to the pier and viaduct as I make my way towards New Barns.

I'm near the Coastguard station now and I can see a couple of sailing dinghies lower down the estuary.

Looking over the estuary to Hampsfell, one of AW's Outlying Fells of Lakeland.

Looks a perfect afternoon. A picnic and game of cricket on the beach with the kids plus a sail. The dinghy is a Mirror Dinghy......more info HERE

A look back to Whitbarrow, another of AW's Outlying Fells of Lakeland.

New Barns

After a short walk up the lane from New Barns I took the path (l) up through Copridding Wood (r)

A look over Silverdale and down the bay towards home as I make my way to the viewpoint.

Looking over Heathwaite to the low-lying promontory of Humphrey Head, yet another Outlying (& low-lying) Fell of Lakeland.

Over New Barns to Grange-over-Sands and Hampsfell with the Furness Peninsula behind.

Cloudy Conistons.

I can see the Highland Calves below me, should I just cut down or go to the summit first...

It's such a gorgeous afternoon, the summit wins.

No chance of a sit down today!....

.....so it's straight down onto Red Hills....

.....for views of Eastern and Far Eastern Fells over Whitbarrow...

.....and the Howgills over Haverbrack

Farleton Knott

It was a warm afternoon so I didn't disturb them....

....the little one was in the bracken and nearly caught up in some bramble...

....so I teased it away towards the others....

.....does that mean "thank you".....I'm not sure!

A short walk soon had be down at the shore.

And finally back into Arnside.

Next Walk:      21st July 2011 - Lake District - Hampsfell

Last Walk:       14th July 2011 - South Cumbria - Newbiggin Crags & Farleton Knott
