I was by myself again for this local walk. Don't panic, Edith hasn't given up walking, it was a Tuesday and she was visiting her brother. A rather dull morning gave way to a better afternoon so I decided to stretch my legs locally.

Route Map

I left the car at the roadside near Scalestones Point....

.....and set off along the promenade towards Hest Bank. The sky was patchy but there are bits of blue starting to appear.

The pebble beach along this stretch is not natural but part of the recently completed sea defence programme.

I left the promenade at the foot of the railway bridge to take a track that would take me along the beach to the rail crossing at Hest Bank. The rock groynes  had plenty of birdlife on them with it being high tide.

This building is now a health club/fitness centre. When I was fishing after leaving the Merchant Navy it was called the "Bradford Cinderella Home" where youngsters from Bradford used to come for short breaks. Unfortunately it had to close around 1977-78 after severe storm damage.

The next section of my walk was a bit messy with the tide being in and covering the salt marsh....

.....more akin to the terrain of the high fells than a beach.....

....however it didn't last long before I reached some salt marsh.

Honest, it wasn't me that made a noise to put them in flight.

Hest Bank foreshore. Start point of the Morecambe Cross Bay walks and where I will leave the shore....

...to walk up Station Rd to gain access to the Lancaster Canal.

I headed off in the direction of Lancaster with a look back towards Hest Bank

I was surprised at the lack of wildlife on the canal today.

Rakes Head Bridge....this is where I will leave the canal but not yet. First I will continue a short way to see if there area any ducks or swans.

After finding nothing at all I made my way back. It was very warm now and I was thinking ice-cream!

Back at Rakes Head Bridge...

The path down towards the Golf Club.

Crossing the railway line to Morecambe

The path runs behind the Morecambe Golf Club....

and behind Happy Mount Park where I am headed.

The cafe looked inviting....

....but my thoughts were of ice-cream.

A wander around the park....

Should I?.....A £1.00 sounds OK for 3 circuits ;-)

The Splash Pool looked cool.

Leaving the park and back on the promenade with a short walk back to the car.

The Calendar season is upon us again. I have had a number of enquiries as to whether I will be producing a calendar this year. Once again the answer is no as I have neither the inclination to do so, or to make money out of what I enjoy. We normally support the R.N.L.I and Mountain Rescue in purchasing our calendars directly from them. However readers may be interested in this one from the Friends of the Lake District....At only £8.00 it offers good value for money and you will know that the monies raised will go the the only charity wholly dedicated to protecting Cumbria's landscape for the future. Just clicking on the picture will take you to the website.

Next Walk:      3rd August 2011 - Lake District - A Rydal Water and Grasmere circuit.

Last Walk:       30th July 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale - A Steam Train, Owls & a familiar hill.
