I was by myself again today. Edith was going on a steam train with her brother and sister to Ravenglass and then to Muncaster. They were leaving Carnforth at 10:45hrs so I made my way to Arnside to get some pictures of the train crossing the newly re-opened viaduct. I was also hoping to meet a couple of Facebook friends although apart from pictures on Facebook I had no idea what they looked like and no idea whereabouts they would be. In the event I recognised one by his dog but sadly missed seeing the other who it later transpired was only a few yards away from me.

Route Map

It was a glorious morning when I arrived. I left the car on the promenade and went to find myself a vantage point.

The siren to warn of the incoming tide had sounded as I arrived. It wasn't too long before the "bore" appeared, only a small one nowadays because the estuary is so flat but still moving at a fast walking pace.

It wasn't too long after the bore that....

....the steam train appeared on it's way across the viaduct to Ravenglass.

OK!!!.....so that's Edith out of the way, time for a walk. ;-)

As per usual my walk took me down the estuary past the pier....

....towards New Barns. There is no problem with the incoming tide, like yesterday the tides are low.

It is a glorious morning and a gentle breeze is keeping the temperature reasonable.

Almost at New Barns.

From New Barns I walked up through Copridding Wood.

....then a short climb up to the two bench seats....

....for views over Silverdale to Clougha Pike and home.

Looking over Heathwaite to Humphrey Head.

Over New Barns to Grange and Hampsfell.

Distant Conistons over Newton Fell

Hazy Lakeland views over Whitbarrow.

From the viewpoint I made my way to the summit....

.....and then onto Red Hills

I love this view.

Looking over Beetham Fell to Farleton Knott with Middleton Fell and Crag Hill behind.

The Howgills over Haverbrack.

Walking back down Red Hills.

A couple of the Highland Cattle.....the young ones were laid out in the bracken so I left them in peace.

Back on the shore and on my way back.

Back.....but not quite finished. Below are a few of the pictures Edith took at Muncaster Castle.

The Calendar season is upon us again. I have had a number of enquiries as to whether I will be producing a calendar this year. Once again the answer is no as I have neither the inclination to do so, or to make money out of what I enjoy. We normally support the R.N.L.I and Mountain Rescue in purchasing our calendars directly from them. However readers may be interested in this one from the Friends of the Lake District....At only £8.00 it offers good value for money and you will know that the monies raised will go the the only charity wholly dedicated to protecting Cumbria's landscape for the future. Just clicking on the picture will take you to the website.

Next Walk:      2nd August 2011 - NW Lancashire - Along the Beach and Canal at Hest Bank

Last Walk:       29th July 2011 - Arnside & Silverdale AONB - A tour of the northern fringe
