I had a doctors appointment at 2:15pm but we thought we could just get this short walk in and get back in time. As things worked out we had to cut the walk a little short but managed a flying visit to Fell Foot Park on the way back.
Route Map
On our way to Finsthwaite we pulled in near Newby Bridge for this picture from a favourite spot of mine.
Newby Bridge
We left the car at Finsthwaite Church where there is a honesty box for parking.
We walked up through the village to take the waymarked path towards Bell Intake and High Dam.
Looking into the sun at Gummer's How.
Crossing the outlet beck from High and Low Dam.
After crossing the outlet beck there followed a pleasant walk up through the woods with the sun filtering through....
....to reach Low Dam just as a shower passed over.
The shower didn't last long however and we were able to have look around Low Dam....
....before walking up to High Dam.
Unfortunately a light breeze is spoiling the chances of any refletions...
We walked around the southern edge of the tarn for a short while...
....and managed a few poor reflections...
We decided to return to the western shore and see if we had time to go to Stott Park Heights....
.....which is a good viewpoint for Windermere...
.....unfortunately when we reached the beck at the lowest point of the path it was in full flow with the normally mossy stones under a few inches of water. Edith was reluctant to cross after a bad past experience elsewhere and knowing that we would have it to cross again on the way back and with time at a premium we decided to cut it short and return using the time saved for a visit elsewhere.
A pity really because there seemed to be some good views available,
We made our way down from High Dam and returned to Finsthwaite.
Arriving back just as the clock struck noon. In retrospect it was a good job we did turn back at the beck or I would have been late for my appointment.
We did however have time for a flying visit to the NT Fell Foot Park for a quick walk around.
It was then a quick dash back to Morecambe where I arrived at my doctors a few minutes late but still in time for my appointment.
The Calendar season is upon us again. I have had a number of enquiries as to whether I will be producing a calendar this year. Once again the answer is no as I have neither the inclination to do so, or to make money out of what I enjoy. We normally support the R.N.L.I and Mountain Rescue in purchasing our calendars directly from them. However readers may be interested in this one from the Friends of the Lake District....At only £8.00 it offers good value for money and you will know that the monies raised will go to the the only charity wholly dedicated to protecting Cumbria's landscape for the future. Just clicking on the picture will take you to the website.
Next Walk: 17th August 2011 - Heughscar Hill & The Cockpit from Askham
Last Walk: 14th August 2011 - NW Lancashire - Conder Green / Glasson & Galgate by canal and field.
